ET Birthday gift starts cat flap
By David Sapsted

A TWO-DAY search for a trapped cat by three fire crews, RSPCA inspectors, neighbours and a couple whose weekend home was torn apart ended in embarrassment yesterday.

Janet and Michael Gilroy first heard "terrible cries" from somewhere in their Victorian semi in Chelmsford, Essex, on Saturday night. Three times they called the fire brigade. Carpets were taken up and floorboards ripped out. One fireman crawled under the floor.

Still the mewing continued as RSPCA inspectors were called four times and neighbours joined the search. Finally the source of the miaowing was discovered: a novelty biscuit barrel [cookie jar], wrapped as a present for Mrs Gilroy's 67th birthday yesterday.

She said: "When I unwrapped it, there was a 10in high barrel for cat treats made like a cat which miaows as you open it. My husband and I felt so embarrassed."

A local wholesaler has been carrying snack bowls which make a really obnoxious sound when you stick your hand inside.

I considered getting one of these for the neighbor's dog.
