Len Cap for Summilux 35mm pre-Asph

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I have a 35mm summilux serial number 301xxxx. I recently acquired the 12504 hood for this lens. I had notice some severe flare problems in certain situations (usually bright point sources at the edge of a scene)Is there a lens cap for the lens/hood combination? Another issue I have noticed is that the lens cap that came with this lens is very tight. The fit is much tighter than on any of my other Leica lenses. The lens cap is not damaged. Erwin Puts site indicates this lens takes a 41mm cap rather than the 39mm cap that is one of the current standard sizes. I think I must have a 39mm cap.

Yes wide open this lens flares in round big halos, when a strong ligth soure in frame or just outside, it corrects by closing half a stop, but still low contrast until f/2, this design comes from the summicron and before from the summaron, you just have to take note and be ware, from 2,8 to 4 the field is not plane, but still it can be an usable caracteristic, at 2 and 1.4, the plane is flat.Lens cap is 39, and it doesn´t have screw for filters.

The cap is an A42 cap which slips over the outside of the front of the lens. It is the same as the one supplied with the 35 Summicron. The earlier Summicron designs were different from the Summilux design and the last non-Asph Summicron actually was modelled on the Summilux (source LHSA Dick Gilcreast articles).

Hi,

I use a generic 58mm snap-on lens cap on the hood, which fits quite nicely into the opening.

Good idea Ville; you´re absolutely rigth John, until now I didn´t know what size were the caps just measured them by the filter size.
