I guess thatīs an old meter may be from the 50īs, the reason cloud be weak selenium cell (if it is a selenium meter), or some mecanical functiona problems in the asembly of it.

Since the Contarex is a Zeiss Ikon product, I think you may have better luck posting your query on a Zeiss Ikon list, like http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ZICG

Its mechanically locked to avoid overexposure, given the smallest aperture that the Contarex will meter couple with. Use a smaller exposure index if you want a slower shutter speed.

BTW the Contarex isn't a rangefinder, and it wasn't made by Leica, but I liked seeing the question here anyway!

The correct exposure is a function of asa , lensopening (f) and time of exposure . A film with the highest commercial asa will give the longest exp. time for the smallest possible opening ( id est f.22 ) There is no practical use of overexposing using time , the men thougt who build the contarex, or you can change f 22 to f 11 in special circumstances.

There is a special mode without the perforated cover of the exposure metering device . Please read the Contarex manual !
