Incompatibility eos 33 with Regula flash : mounted and in off-position

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Camera Equipment : One Thread

I bought a eos 33, and I'm having some problems with an older Regula flash that was bought ten years ago for my eos 1000. The additional focus light doens't work. Another problem is this : when I have the flash mounted but in the off-position, the camera doens't shoot : it opens the shutter, and is blocked until you put it off and than on again. The frame is lost. Can anyone help me about these problems ?

Non-compatibility problems are more common with non-Canon lenses that with flash units. Yours is the second complaint I've heard about the EOS 30/33/Elan 7/7e not working with an older third party flash. I believe the only cure is to buy a new flash unit. Canon only guarantees that their cameras are compatible with their own Speedlites.

Hello Catry,

This issue was discussed recently on the Elan 7E Mailing List.

The behaviour you describe is according to specification, and also happens with the Canon flashes that I use on my EOS 1000FN (equivalent to REBEL SII) and my Elan 7E (equivalent to EOS 30).

For my Elan 7E:

Switching the power OFF to a flash in the hotshoe causes the camera to expose only for ambient light. If you release the shutter, you could be asking for a long exposure (e.g. 8 s). To stop such an exposure, you need to turn the camera to "L".

Hope this helps

I tried some things out, and here is what I conclude : (my flash is a Variant Regula 30 MC- AF, my camera Eos 33)

when I have the flash mounted, but in the off-position: it is not a long exposure that the camera does : it blocks fully, the lcd-screen becomes totally blank except for a flashing battery sign. It is not possible to take pictures with the flash mounted and in off- position.

the AF Assist Lamp : it works in the fully automatic setting, as well as in all "icon" modes; hower, if I use the P, Av , Tv of M modes : it doesn't work. I tried everything.

It seems like time to replace your old Regula flash with a modern Canon Speedlite.

I bought the Canon Speedlite 420 EX. Thank you.
