DUNMORE, Pa. (AP) - Thomson Consumer Electronics plans to close its plant here in August and move its manufacturing jobs to Mexico, putting some 1,070 people out of work, company officials said Friday.

Thursday May 31 12:24 PM ET Bethlehem Steel Moving to Cut Workforce NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bethlehem Steel Corp. (NYSE:BS - news) said Thursday it is taking steps to improve financial performance, including increased spending controls and additional reductions in its salaried work force.

In a brief statement, the second-largest U.S. steel producer said the steps were outlined in a letter sent to employees last Friday. Company officials were not immediately available to elaborate.

About 100 of the Portland employees lost their jobs Tuesday, and Alcatel will phase out the remaining jobs as it closes the plant by the end of this year, said Alcatel spokesperson Brian Murphy.

Hardware Store Closing Leaves Lubbockites Unemployed

Dozens of local workers will soon be out of job when longtime building supply store, Payless Cashways, closes its doors in Lubbock. Payless Cashways will be one of seven stores in six states to shut down.

The chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy about four years ago, and is periodically closing stores. The stores involved in the latest round of closings are in Lubbock, Colleyville, Texas, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Stores will also close in Kansas, Arizona and Kentucky.

These closings will cost 214 workers their jobs.

Nokia Corp (NOK, news)., the world's largest mobile-telephone company, said it plans to cut 300 jobs at its production plant in Bochum, Germany, in a move to increase efficiency.

The Bochum facility, which employs around 3,000 people, will focus on the final assembly of mobile phones, while part of the current board assembly will be shifted to other Nokia facilities and to contract manufacturers, Nokia said Friday.

NEW YORK--Varian Semiconductor Equipment Inc. (VSEA.O), a maker of tools used in the production of microchips, on Monday warned that fiscal third-quarter revenues would fall below earlier expectations due to continued weakness in the chip industry, and said it had reduced its work force by 20 percent since Jan. 1. Revenues in the quarter ending June 30 are now expected to fall 30 percent to 35 percent from a year ago to between $125 million to $135 million. The previous forecast was for a drop of more than 25 percent. The company also said it has reduced its work force by about 20 percent, or about 440 workers, since Jan. 1 through job cuts and attrition. About half of the reduction was among full-time staffers, a spokesman said.

AutoZone To Close 30 to 60 Stores

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - AutoZone Inc. (NYSE:AZO - news) plans to shut down 30 to 60 stores nationally in the next few months as part of a review of stores that are not meeting performance standards.

Company officials did not identify the troubled stores. They said they did not expect many layoffs.

June 12, 2001 Autozone stores claim that there should not be many layoffs in their planned closing of 30 to 60 stores sounds too good to be true. If each store has 10 employees that would amount to 300 to 600. If each store has 20 employees, it would be doubled, etc.

BOSTON (AP) Polaroid, facing enormous debts as it tries to reposition itself from making cameras and film into digital imaging, said Wednesday it would cut 2,000 jobs, or 25 percent of its global work force. About half the cuts would come in the United States, said spokesman Skip Colcord. Most of the company's domestic work force is in Massachusetts.

Mail-Well earnings down, will close nine plants Denver-based Mail-Well Inc. said today it will close nine of its U.S. plants and also announced that it expects its second-quarter earnings to fall 81 percent below a year ago.

Company officials said the plant closings are part of a plan to achieve 15 to 20 percent earnings per share growth in the next five years.

No layoffs have been announced by the company yet.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Furniture and electronic assembly manufacturer Kimball International Inc. (NasdaqNM:KBALB - news) said on Thursday it is cutting another 200 jobs, or 2 percent of its work force, and taking up to $30 million in charges as part of a restructuring plan to contain costs amid the slowing U.S. economy.

06-14-01 SHELTON Conn. (AP) - About 30 warehouse workers are expected to lose their jobs and another 30 will retire early when Timex Corp. shuts its distribution center in Shelton next month.

LONDON (CNN) - Pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline has announced it is axing more than a thousand jobs in Britain.

The company said it is closing a plant in Speake, near Liverpool, that employs 500 people, and another 400 workers will go at Barnard Castle in northern England.

A factory in Plymouth, southwestern England, also is expect to be shut down with the loss of 170 jobs.
