Where are you from?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I asked a question on 26th April and tonight I finally got to read the reply which Buff kindly posted. In it, Buff revealed that like myself, he comes from Gateshead. Which reminded me to ask what I've meant to ask, ever since I first came across this "place". Just where do you all come from and if you don't live in these parts any longer, where are you? Now I know that it will be old news to a lot of you and uninteresting to others but I for one, would like to know. Thank you.

Blaydon > Winlaton > Jarrow > London (Stamford Hill & Hendon) > Knutsford > Winsford > Knutsford > Hale

South Manchester is it for me I reckon.

As for the chips - is it only in the NE where they do chicken in batter and haggis @ the chip shop ?

Born in Ashington, went to live in Preston when my dad went off to war, boarding school at Grange over Sands, returned to Ashington in 1946 -- went to Bedlington Grammar and on to University College , Hull. RAF national service (Padgate, School of Slavonic Studies University College, London University and Bodmin Cornwall) Started as trainee with the Corporation -- Hull, Birmingham, London, Chester, Hull, Brussels, New Brunswick N.J and now retired in Florida. Have lived in twenty-two houses -- I think my mum used to move because she liked the wallpaper better -- and seventeen different jobs with the Corporation.

Born in Los Angeles, went to university in NYC and stayed until moving to Boston(MA not UK), now in Baltimore, looking for a work permit so I can move to Newcastle(or as close as possible) and use my season ticket for more than a handful of games a year.

Born in Gosforth, lived everywhere. Spent summer holidays (and every other opportunity I could find) with my grandparents in Seghill. Currently living about 60 miles south of Seattle. Became a toon fan during the White-Eastham-Allchurch era (Toon 7, Manure 3 - yes, I was there!).

Ciara - you've probably answered this question a million times, but with your background how in the world did you become a toon fan?

-- Anonymous, May 26, 2001

Introduced to footie in a packed Irish pub in Boston watching Ireland v Italy in the 94 World Cup, which started the interest. Lack of opportunity to see much else kept full blown obsession at bay until the 98 World Cup where I watched every televised match I could. Girlie lust in some bloke called Alan Shearer had me surfing the net for more info on his club team which led me to this bbs(Communicata back then). Very excited the first day of the 98/99 premiership season to find out Charlton v Newcastle would be televised and I'd get to see the 'exciting' NUFC for myself. We all know how that one went, but the seed was sown. I felt very connected to the Geordie wit, wisdom and passion exhibited on teh BBS, and that more than anything else drew me in. Subsequent visits to London(another dismal match at West Ham) and Toon(with Jonno acting as indoctrinator tour guide, and I was madly in love with the place, the people and the team.

So far I've found no direct blood connection to the region, but do have a line going back to England and/or Scotland(possibly Sterling). Unfortunately it's the line about which next to nothing is known. I do feel a connection to Northern England and (to a lesser degree) Scotland similar to the strong connection I've always felt with Ireland(another bloodline of my UN of family bg about which much more is known). It's a place where my soul feels at home. :-)

Lovely story ciara - and we're thrilled to have you as part of the Toon community.
Just a thought regarding work permits, is your surname of European origin? If so, are there any possibilities of obtaining an EU passport through your lineage - just as many S/American footballers do? Sauce for the goose, and all that......

Actually have attempted to suss that out, Clarky. My last name is Spanish and there is actually a village in Spain by the same name. Unfortunately I can't read Spanish and haven't been able to find out just how many generations back Spanish authorities allow to grant a passport. At the very least, I'm 2 generations away. My dad was born in El Salvador as were his parents, as far as we know. They didn't mention much of their past at all, and unfortunately nobody in my family thought much about asking while they were alive.

Born in Swindon, Wiltshire where my father was posted with the RAF in 1941. Family moved back to the NE in 1947 when father was demobed. First home game I saw was a Boxing Day match against Smoggies somewhere around 48-49. Went to Tynemouth High School (but before Galaxy's famous incident) Played rugby for Percy Park; went to University College London and then worked in Edinburgh for 17 years. I managed quite a few games then and became a season ticket holder. Moved to Seattle in 1985 to escape the depradations of Thatcher on UK science. I am now at the University of Washington, http://faculty.washington.edu/edford/ and live on a houseboat (really!)

Great thread , especially for me that is , applying Softies Statisical Formula, hinge and bracketts - *see groups or groupies, determine a musical event, T in the Park, Glastonbury , Knebsworth , apply the Barnett Formula (cash Flow) and I find the following contributors named , Sparxx, Floridean , Sounder, SMB , Phoenix, True , Pit Bull, Clarky/Jonno are bracketed together in the `Afternoon Tea Dance at the Oxford` category, no females but that never bothered the Highland Regt`s in the past, we have the correct numbers , aul timers please arise for the `Eightsome Reel`, lets show these young bucks a stooshie

BTW Kevin excuse me if I have confused you again, never been the same since 96 when in a packed bar 6 burly Jocks knocked 10 bells out of me as I celebrated with my Toon Shirt on the two goals scored by 2 great Geordies , Shearer and Gazza. Nae problem to me , accept it, stand down to no-one, but I have this thing about key-board insults, especially the ones directed at Mr Robson , you see I can see through people and Soupa Kevin would not have the guts to say it to his face and as auld as he is I would take odds on for Bobby to smack you one,

Born in Birmingham in 1968 as my Geordie parents were heading further south. They eventually made it as far as Dunedin, in New Zealand, by 1971. In 1994 I started the journey in reverse, moving north to Auckland, and last year managed to get to Troyes, in France, were I'm absolutely loving it. I usually manage to get over for a game most years, as most of my family still live in the North-East. I've got some in Lobley Hill, Jesmond, Stocksfield, and a cousin who's moved to Aberdeen.

-- Anonymous, May 27, 2001

David I feel I know you or your relations at Lobley Hill , not need much prodding to find out , I had a left back called David Hewson about 73-75, nah, eh?

-- Anonymous, May 27, 2001

Buff, all my relations in Lobley Hill are from my mum's side of the family, and are called McLeod. They live on Whickham Highway, just down the road from the Highwayman. One of my uncles was quite handy as young lad, but was a right winger. In fact he was offered an apprenticehip with the Toon, but went for the money (and stability) on offer as a fitter and turner. And he hasn't worked for 20 years! It's best not to mention Thatcher!

I'll actually be in Aberdeen in July for a couple of days for my cousin's wedding. Aparently I've got to wear a kilt! It won't be too cold there in July will it?

Well you did ask; born in Haltwhistle (west of Hexham), went to school in the Toon (St.Cuthbert's Grammar), then university in Nottingham. My working life began in London followed by, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, actually most of Europe as I worked for McDonalds (I then 'lived' in Frankfurt and Paris). Since then I've lived and/or worked all over Asia (curently in Singapore, Bukit Timah, Buff!), mostly in Hong Kong, Jakarta and China. I've just finished 6 months in Sri Lanka and I'm hopefully going back to Hong Kong soon?

I forgot to add that I lived in South Africa on and off from 1984 'til 1997. I have homes, here in Singapore, in Northumberland, in South Africa and, in Sydney - I hope to live in Oz once this career of mine careers off the rails!

Having said that, I'll always be a Geordie and proud of it.

Ciara, if you've read this do you know Finksburg, Maryland (v. close to Baltimore?), I've a good friend there and I'm planning to visit him later this year?

Bud, haven't heard of Finksburg, but I've only been here about 6mos so still getting to know the area. If you have time while you're here, you might want to drive out the Eastern Shore area. Made my first foray over there today. Spectacular views from the Bay Bridge, and lovely scenery once across. Even found a shop selling hard-to-find imported beers. Drinking a bottle of Old Peculier right now. Will have to go back for the Geuze(!!) and Framboise from their Belgian shelf. Those were a bit too expensive for my purse right now. I live about 20min north of the bridge,in Glen Burnie, so more day trips will definitely be on the agenda this summer!

Bud, I did receive two e-mails from you re the school, Sting etc..

Born in Corbridge 1955. On the day I was taken home from the hospital, we won the FA Cup, but I don't remember much about it. All downhill since then. First matches on Saturdays watching the N's on Nuns Moor with father and brother, when I was about 3 or 4 I suppose, spent most of the time playing in the grass at the back of the pitch. Without knowing or caring, I probably saw Alan Suddick playing some of his first games. When he got in the first team, he pulled someone's shorts down in the wall when we were taking a free kick, didn't he? Other weeks we went to see Crawcrook Albion - I wonder if they're still going? I remember clambering up what seemed like a big dirty mountain to get to the top of the terracing to see my first match at St James's, probably about the same time late 50's or early 60's. Went to school in Newcastle, and University in Southampton (Terry Payne/Mick Channon era) and also Newcastle 77-80. Moved to Belgium then Denmark and then back to Belgium. Live near the Waterloo battlefield. When I take the Eurostar through the tunnel, I can ask for a ticket from Waterloo to Waterloo. Helped out as a UEFA volunteer at Euro 2000 in Charleroi - got into the commentators' stand to see Shearer's last goal for England and final trudge off the pitch, and the aftermath of the rioting - I was in the press centre a couple of hundred yards away when it was actually happening. Half- hearted supporter of Charleroi (black and white stripes too, and Philippe Albert connection). This is the first election I can't vote in - they take your name off the electors' list after 20 years living outside of England.

Kiwi

Don't worry about it being too cold for a kilt, it the hottest means of clothing known to man, in July it'll be unbearably hot, worse is that the women think it's the sexiest thing a man can be seen in, and out of, this has nothing to do with the sense that you're commando underneath, although by the end of a wedding reception they're all desperate to know for sure. You have been warned.

Born Bucks 1938 (YES OLD!) Dad (was in the army Northamberland Fusiliers) hailed from Seaton Burn, Mother from S.Shields, Brother from Byker. All family from NE. All Newcastle fanatics. Had no choice and never regretted it. Wonderful feeling being with and I can honestly say, fellor geordies at a match regardless of age, sex, colour. Heart warming expeiences. Saw Joe Harvey lead them out with big red number 4 on his back, against Wolves March 49 0-3. Also saw 51 brilliant Newcastle against superb Spurs 70,000 at WHL. 0-7. Next year in the cup 70,000 10,000 locked out at WHL 3-0. Oh frabjous days. Yes and I did see the great 5-4 match at Fulham. With the Toon it is like being with a beautiful unfaithful partner, they give you the happiest moments and then break your heart, but also rather like being a Catholic you cant leave them. Enough of that. Background. Born Bucks moved back to Jarrer, Wallsend,Jarrer, Benwell, Brighton, Norfolk and Bucks again. RAF. Then since 1971 lived in Australia, Sudia-Arabia, Egypt,Ethiopia, China, Turkey, Vietnam, Kenya, Taiwan, Burma and now in Hong Kong for next 3 hyears. Depite that my heart is really in 37 1/2 Sheldon Street Jarrer...No that would be a bit too sentimental, couldnt really claim that. What I would claim is my optimism is second to none. Perhaps even blind. But its there. What a great bunch you all are. Let me buy you a drink. Off to Bangkok for 3 weeks work next weeks anyone in the Rooster bar at Buckskin Joes just off Sukhumvitt ask for me and there will be a cold Singha behnd the bar for you God bless you and wait till next s

b1949 Gosforth, first two years Denton, then North Kenton. First Newcastle memory 1955: father and grandfather home from the cup final, complaining (!) the first goal was too soon for them to see. Not allowed to go to game until 1964 (father now off scene, grandfather dead, Leazes end "wasn't safe" until I was 15 - if only she'd known!). Team: Marshall, Craig, Clark, Anderson, McGrath, Iley, Hockey, Hilley, McGarry, Penman, Suddick - from memory - maybe slightly wrong but I don't have the book to look up.

Didn't miss a game 1964 to 1968, including Jackie Milburn's testimonial. 1968 left for the deep south to get qualified, nicely in time to miss Wyn the Leap and the rest winning the Fairs Cup. Just lucky I guess. 1968 to 1976 lots of dismal away games at Highbury, WHL, the Dell etc etc - who says the London jinx is new? Tried aversion therapy watching Oxford United, but it didn't work (of course). Their big number six at the time was expressing an interest in management; I remember wondering if it would work out, Atkinson his name was.

Moved to Sheffield 1977, too busy for quite a few years to do much other than find the result each week as soon as possible. Back to Newcastle soon after, still too busy for a long time until circumstances changed, then watching as many games as possible until the chance came to get a season ticket. Which I did, just about in time to see "the decline" in glorious technicolour, having missed most of the Keegan years.

Come to think of it, I'm an albatross, aren't I? I'm going out now. I may be some time...

Born Wealdstone, Middx 1965 as a Geordie/Cornish hybrid. Father was born and raised within walking distance of St James', as were at least 4 generations before him. I grew up having the obligatory family indoctrination visits, initially to Newcastle and then more often to Corbridge where my grandparents retired to. Not as regular a match-goer as some if not most on here - I've never been able to get my life sorted properly ;-)
