Shola Ameobi

Played last night for the U21's but failed to score. Did anyone watch the game?

Are we getting a bit too excited about a young lad who has only scored two goals for us this season? I know he's got a lovely smile and he loves the Toon but his U21 strike partner was Malcolm Christie who has scored around 15-16 goals for Derby this season I think.

Yes, I watched the game Deb. He only played the first half, being subbed after being brutally fouled from behind by a dirty Mex b@st@rd who could very easily have broken his leg. This guy cleaned shola out, catching him at the side of his right calf midway between his ankle and knee. He was down for a long time, and I was convinced he had broken his leg. However, he eventually got up and finished the last 10 minutes of the half with a slight limp - I think he was OK, and was probably subbed as a precaution.

Quite unbelievably, the offender was not even booked by the Scittish Ref, for a red card tackle if ever I've seen one. However, we was booked in the second half, and then sent off for giving the Ref serious verbals, in fact he needed to be dragged away by three teammates to prevent him chinning the Ref.

As for Shola's performance - he was good. He produced one good turn and shot which produced a good save. The team were hitting from from deep, and his ability to hold the ball and lay it off intelligently, was impressive. He also layed the ball off well with his head on a couple of occasions. This should provide a good pointer to the Toon as to how he could be used to great effect, as I don't think he is ever going to be an instinctive finisher.

I was disappointed with most of the U-21's last night, and Shola was certainly one the best.
The highly-touted Davids, Prutton and Dunne were hugely disappointing, John Terry and Titus Bramble made a number of elementary errors, and Malcolm Christie did little.

Saun Davis looked good in midfield, Shola did well up front in the 1st half, and his replacement Jermaine Pennant (Arsenal) looked a very exiting player - and brave as the Mexs tried hard to kick him out of the game, and out of football - pacey, beats men with ease and hit a whole series of excellent crosses, something that seems to be beyond most players thse days.

Sean Davis would be a tremendous signing for us, way too pricey but I'd rather see him at Newcastle than Clark. Come on Fulham put a bid in for Speed and we get Davis, Woooohooo!
