House Noises

There are hundreds of noises that come from a house. Even if we eliminate pets, kids, and electronics, the house still makes plenty of noise. Water running in pipes, heat coming on and off, and all the other mechanical noises are normal and we usually don't even notice them. What about those noises that defy explanation? Creaks, pops, and groans in the night or when you are the only one home might have you believing in ghosts. The truth is houses are moving all the time. When hot water runs through pipes they expand and make ticking noises as they rub against framing. When the sun shines on one side of the house it warms and moves at a different rate then other structural members, and the result is noises. Pay attention to noises! The ones we don't recognize might be warning signs of things soon to go wrong -- or they may be new ghosts moving in.
