What made Poe unique was the fact that he was the first writer of his era to utilize the deeper psychological aspects of fear in writing. Without Poe's footing in subtle terror, famous authors like Steven King would most likely have written in wildly different styles. Poe has also never been bested at the art of displaying the dark side of the human mind; making a reader believe that something completely bizarre is possible or at least feasible and acceptable. It was these traits that lead to Poe's popularity, especially after his death.
