Stephen Glass offered a new deal

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

According to Ceefax (the briefs page):

Daniel Cordone, Kevin Gallacher, Des Hamilton and David McMahon have all been released on free transfers.

Stephen Glass has been offered a new one year deal to stay at the club.

Good news in my opinion, although if he's not going to get a game it's a bit unfair on the lad.

Frankly, one one year contract offer at this stage is an insult to the lad. For his own sake, I hope he leaves and picks up his career elswhere.

I believe Bobby's not worried about losing him, a one year deal is not going to keep him.... Other sides have been itching to get hold of him, he'll be headed back north of the border in a matter of minutes...

I posted this on the "Glass and Gallacher" thread earlier this afternoon. I'm still interested in the reason for Glass's treatment. Are the club and/or BR just plain incompetent?

The Ronny reckon that we have only offered SG a one year contract. Pretty insulting IMO - if I was the lad I'd definitely go now. Either he's good enough to warrant being made a serious offer, or, he isn't good enough and should be released; he shouldn't be messed around like this. Does anyone know what issue the club have with SG. Do they simply not rate him as a player or are there concerns regarding either fitness, application or attitude?

A 1 year deal is silly. He'll be Bosman free again next summer. If he impresses in the first half of the season he can sign a pre-contract in January. The guy has talent, scores goals, makes goals and is only 25. With a decent run in the side he could prove to be £3m worth or more. Unless there is something we don't know (attitude, behaviour etc) then we are making a big mistake in not making Glass a very decent offer.

Hardly a glowing endorsement from Bobby, judging by this quote:

The United boss said: "We have offered Stephen Glass another one year's contract because we don't want him to be without one next season.

"Our offer is on the table although obviously we accept that if Glass were to get a better one from elsewhere he could take it."

Anyway, I thought his contract was up at the end of this season anyway?

.....but who has really shown interet? Rangers - well, would he get a regular place? Plus a couple of "drop outs" who excape mae at the moment. To be honest, will he get a better offer? I'm not sure - and neither is YBR. The ball is now in SG's court.

That's true. In which case he'd probably be wise to sign the contract, then play out of his skin the first half of the season and hopefully get himself a much improved deal either with us or elsewhere.

-- Anonymous, May 23, 2001

... and perhaps that is whats seen as the issue by Mr Robson. That SG does not "play out of his skin." If there is no real interest in him then a one year deal tests his potential.

Only tests his potential if he gets a game , attitude no problem , too quiet and modest if anything, as for other clubs, they are hanging in waiting for the "Lists", apart from a few there is not much candy .

IMO letting Glass go would be directly comparable to when we binned Robbie Elliott. Neither are world beaters but are proven squad assets - better goal ratio than most midfielders - dubious but not disastrous injury history - cost significantly more to replace like for like than to keep (always assuming you actually CAN do so in a very tight market for PL-standard lefties). As others have already pointed out we aren't privy to Bobby's plans and he may have a top-notch leftie lined up. As always for us though, that would still beg the question of who would replace the newcomer if we were to sell Glass. Mark my words this is a critical decision for YBR - he won't survive more than another season if Glass becomes the new Robbie Elliott by being sold and not replaced.

I've noticed one or two allegations about Stephen Glass's attitude on here.
Let me say that I have seen abolutely nothing wrong with his attitude whatsoever, and I suspect those suggesting it are simply seeking some logical excuse for his incomprehensible treatment. If the Manager really doesn't rate the lad, why then is he offering him a contract at all?
As Buff says, when the FT lists are fully circulated, and Clubs realise they can sign an international of SG's calibre for nothing there will be plenty of takers.
This is but another sad episode in the soap opera that NUFC has become.

If he's so good - why hasn't anyone signed him already?

-- Anonymous, May 24, 2001

Clarky, I don't think there have been any allegations about Spectacles Glass's attitude on here. Some of us are just so astounded he has not been signed up already that some are wondering if there are other issues involved.

On his record, he is an excellent player. Creative, goalscoring, and left sided(!). It is up to Robson to have noticed this fact and he has damned him with faint praise so far. If there are no other issues involved then I really fail to see what Robson is playing at in not signing him up for a decent period.

Bob has obviously lined up a left winger for next year and maybe he feels that SG won't get a game?

As for SG i think he's been off 'sick' a couple of times hasn't he? maybe Bob doesn't think he has the mental strength to last a season?

A 1 year deal is insulting, he hasn't been given a fair crack of the whip. I hope he stays but I cannot see it.
