Sources: Jeffords to Bolt GOP for Democrats

By ABCNEWS.com

In a move that would throw control of the evenly divided Senate to Democrats, Vermont Sen. James Jeffords has told others he is bolting from the GOP, congressional staffers tell ABCNEWS.

In a move that would throw control of the evenly divided Senate to the Democrats, Vermont Sen. James Jeffords has told others he is bolting from the GOP, congressional staffers told ABCNEWS.

Senate staffers say Jeffords, the subject of intense speculation since ABCNEWS.com reported last Friday that he was considering the move, has made up his mind and is switching to the Democratic side.

If he follows through, Democrats would retake control of the Senate, 51-49. Though the Senate is now split 50-50, Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites)'s tie-breaking vote tilts the balance of power to Republicans.

A switch by Jeffords would be bad news for President Bush (news - web sites), whose agenda faces substantial opposition from Democrats.

Dems Put Out the Welcome Mat

Jeffords reportedly met this morning with Cheney on Capitol Hill and later with Bush at the White House in what appears to have been a futile last-ditch effort by the GOP's standard-bearers to get him to stay.

"I have nothing to say," Jeffords told reporters after emerging from the Senate floor.

Asked how his meeting with Bush had gone, he responded, "Meetings with the president always go well."

Questioned by reporters after the White House meeting, Jeffords' press secretary said that as far as he knew, nothing had changed.

But earlier, Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle put out the welcome mat.

"I just know he'd be welcome whatever choice he would make," said Daschle, D-S.D.

Sources close to Jeffords told ABCNEWS he has been courted aggressively by Democrats in recent weeks.

Perhaps the most moderate Republican in the Senate, Jeffords has often been at odds with many of his more conservative GOP colleagues. But he's also a longtime friend of Senate Republican Leader Trent Lott of Mississippi.

Asked today about speculation that Jeffords might switch, Lott said, "He's never indicated anything of that nature to me."

Get ready for three years of obstruction with 2004 the only goal.

-- Carlos (riffraff@cybertime.net), May 23, 2001.

That would be very appropriate. Dumbya obstructed justice to get into the Whitehouse, so he will get what he deserves, obstruction. Obstruction of a psycopathic man-child who threatens the future of mankind is a VERY "good thing"!

Carlos-

How would that be any different from 1997-2000?

Good point Tarzan!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Tom Daschle now become Senate Leader?

-- Tarzan the Ape Man (tarzan@swingingthroughthejunglewithouta.net), May 23, 2001.

Jeffords is a big-spending elitist. He should fit in just fine with Hillary and company.

Tarzan, kinda like Jan 1981- Jan 1993?

-- Dr. Pibb (dr.pibb@zdnetonebox.com), May 23, 2001.

Exactly, Dr. Pibb. Obstruction is nothing new to these people.

-- Tarzan the Ape Man (tarzan@swingingthroughthejunglewithouta.net), May 23, 2001.

Don't say the word "obstruction" around the Clintons. It isn't polite.

Jeffords--

Good riddance. You can have him.

Wow! A republican with a .... conscience!

"Jeffords sought a commitment from the White House for more federal education funding for disabled students as a condition for supporting the president's spending plan and $1.6 trillion tax cut. The White House balked, and GOP aides accused Jeffords at the time of reneging on a compromise hashed out with Cheney and senior Republican leaders.

"Shortly after the vote, Jeffords was not invited to the White House for a National Teacher of the Year award ceremony honoring a Vermont high school educator. In addition, some GOP aides have whispered that the White House might retaliate by seeking changes in a dairy support system that benefits farmers in Vermont and the Northeast."

What a bunch of morons on the White House. They are clueless about taking care of their own; they only have the interests of their donors at heart. Screw disabled children! Give wealth to the wealthy, and "faith" to the poor!

Three cheers for an old-school republican who still has something called a conscience.

We welcome you into the fold of The Humane, Senator Jeffords.

Jeffords is a tax-and-spend socialist. The compromise was to take the money for Jefford's wanted out of the general budget, but Jeffords wanted to slash the tax cuts. Liberals can never have enough taxes, so I'm sure Jeffords will be much happier with Hillary and company. I don't label as conservative anyone, republican or democrat, who wants to increase the size and power of the federal government.

"Wow! A republican with a .... conscience!"

This is in direct violation of the rules of Dumbya's exclusive Nazi club, that's why he has to change to Democrat.

I am now a republican. I switched my side to. hehehehe

-- Tony Balony (Screw the@dims.com), May 23, 2001.

Me too Tony!

now fuck-off y'alls!

see how fast I learnin?

You said what a bunch of morons on the white house. Now, let the nitpicking begin. I'll go first, who is the real moron?

-- real maroon (who@is.the), May 23, 2001.

Tarz, it seems you're right about that.

The guy hasn't formally switched sides yet, however, and he may receive information from his constituents that will influence his decision. Personally, I vote for people and not parties, but I've heard of people who call themselves yellow dogs or blue dogs or something who vote for people based solely on whether they have a D or an R after their name.

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), May 23, 2001.

Yeah, Yellow Dog Democrats, it's a Southern term. When you'd rather vote for a yellow dog than a Republican, you're a Yellow Dog Dem. I'm not sure what the other term means, maybe it's for Republicans?

Zell Miller, BTW, is a self-described Yellow Dog Democrat.
