Al Sharpton for Pres in '04'?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Wild Wild West : One Thread

As has been reported nationally the past two days, the Rev. Al Sharpton is beginning to position himself to run for President in 2004. Before you bend over in convulsions, consider the current demographics of the Democratic Party and '‘be very concerned'’. So all of you whimpering liberals, here is your next champion to take you to the Promised Land.

If this is true, I can't think of better news for the Republican party.

-- J (Y2J@home.comm), May 22, 2001.

Sharpton would get most, if not the entire African American vote and a good percentage of other minorities as well. This will give the Democratic leadership a major problem and result in some monumental rifts within the Party. The Tom Dashel’s of the world will be going ‘black face’ at every opportunity to deflect the Reverend’s momentum. As ‘J’ has stated, this will be a windfall for the Republican’s as nobody will stay home on Voting day for fear of this fool actually being elected.

You're assuming the Democrats will have mastered the 'art' of voting by then too.......;-)

Do you have a link to a story stating that Sharpton is beginning to position himself to run for president? It's my understanding that he's NOT a well-known figure outside of his little district in NY. Then again, I haven't checked the Minority News links in a few days.

-- Anita (Anita_S3@hotmail.com), May 22, 2001.

As always Anita, your 'understanding' is a few clicks away from the mainstream. Why not ask your SO? Better yet, tear yourself away from the keyboard and read a paper, watch the news. Or, should it be too painful to leave your seat, do a google search on Al Sharpton. You can be amazingly ignorant for such a worldly person as you 'claim' to be.

NEW YORK (AP) –

The Rev. Al Sharpton on Sunday said he wants to explore a run for the presidency in 2004.

Sharpton said he will help organize a national effort to find a progressive candidate to run in the Democratic presidential primary, "and I'm available to be that candidate."

In a telephone interview with The Associated Press, Sharpton said that "the Democratic Party failed to protect us in the last election. They did not deal with the disenfranchised voters that were never counted. In many ways they took us for granted. ... We cannot afford to be marginalized."

Noting the Rev. Jesse Jackson's runs for president in 1984 and 1988, Sharpton said: "Twenty years later, we need to do the same thing, and maybe we need another black activist preacher from New York to run, to galvanize people."

He said his purpose would be to promote issues that concern blacks and progressives "and to win as many of these primaries as possible. It would not be just symbolism."

Sharpton told Time magazine, which first reported the reverend's willingness to run, that the idea came to him while he sat under a tree in Sudan, which he visited in April on a fact-finding tour about slavery.

He denied that he was taking advantage of the Rev. Jesse Jackson's tarnished image. "I'm not one to think that Rev. Jackson's finished," he said. "I'm not trying to take advantage of his travail. My rise is not at Jesse's expense. If I'm rising it's because I've done the work on issues like police brutality that affect huge numbers of our people."

In January, Jackson acknowledged fathering an out-of-wedlock child with a woman on the staff of his Washington office.

Sharpton ran for U.S. Senate in New York in 1994 and came in third in a four-way contest in the Democratic primary with 25 percent of the vote. In 1997, he took 32 percent of the vote in a Democratic mayoral primary.

Now I’m bent over with convulsions! ROTFLMAO

Minority News isn't saying ANYTHING about Sharpton running for President. In fact, the last article I could find about Sharpton was in the archives. His National Action Network is simply a fringe group. He can spout all he wants, but the mainstream, outside of his little conclave in NY, consider him to be simply an activist. Jesse is ALSO an activist, as was Ralph Nader. The majority of folks realize that activism does NOT equate to presidential material.

I'm hell bent over on trying to see the chiken flop around with a convulsion. LMFAO.

-- (chik@en.shit), May 22, 2001.

I agree with Anita, Sharpton is considered way over the fringe. Still he could have alot of fun in the primaries and make things hard for the other candidates. More importantly he would do the thing that I believe is most important to him - get his name in the news quite often.

Maybe David Duke will consider a candidacy as a way to ensure his name is once again mention in the media. There are nuts on both sides.

Right now, on CNN ‘Talk back Live’ you can see the 2nd smartest nigger in the world tellin’ us why he should be taken seriously as a Presidential candidate in 2004. Minority News? What are you talking about Anita? Stupid woman.

-- No (bo@dy.home), May 22, 2001.

I went to this ‘Minority News’ link and found a ‘BLACK ONLY’ racist site. The fact is that other minorities in this country go to great lengths to distance themselves from the blacks. Gee, wonder why?

Sharpton Sentenced to Jail

-- (too@funny.haha), May 24, 2001.

The sad truth here is that this will enhance Rev. Sharpton’s popularity within his core group of supporters. When a people’s value system exists at this level than so shall they.

As a side note, it is being reported today that the Rev. Jesse Jackson had taken the Toyota Corporation to task over a postcard advertising campaign. Seems that this card showed a smiling black man with a gold ‘tooth art’ depicting the RAV 4 logo. A gold tooth? Where on earth did Toyota come up with this concept? I just can’t imagine a black man with a gold tooth, can you?

-- So (cr@t.es), May 24, 2001.

No I can not. It is a racist statement at the least Sockinit. I would venture to guess you live in a trailer perhaps? I dont like sharpton but it has nothing to do with the color of his skin.

-- hey sockinit (sorry@my.ass), May 24, 2001.

anonymous one,

I hope that you see the hypocrisy in inferring that someone is a racist while at the same time denigrating those who live in trailers.

That is too funny.

-- J (Y2J@home.comm), May 24, 2001.

I have personally known many black dudes that have a gold tooth. This has long been a popular thing with these guys and I am wondering why it would be ‘racist’ to talk about it or point it out? I think it boils down to taking responsibility for your actions. The African American leaders seem to always be looking for ways to blame everyone else for their own peoples actions and life style choices. This will not result in elevating the status of blacks in the world community.

Hey Anita, your great source for current information, ‘Minority News’ has to be the biggest joke on the Internet. Because of you, I have gone to this site today to see how they are treating the Al Sharpton story. Not one friggin’ word! Actually, the only thing ‘current’ about this site is the date at the top of the first page. The rest of the so-called ‘NEWS’ links are old shit from last year or just not working.

So, this is your treasured source for news from the black community? That figures as most everything that comes from you is pure bullshit.

-- Lay Down (on@the.couch), May 25, 2001.

Typical propaganda method to fragment your opposition, divide and conquer.

I can't think of anyone in their right mind who would consider him a potential presidential candidate. But spreading the concept can do nothing but cause negative discourse.

In other words, not bloody likely, but it makes for a good argument against liberal politics.
