Drinking culture at Maine Road

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Joe Royle became just another of football's statistics yesterday after being sacked by Manchester City to leave the relegated club facing a traumatic summer amid damaging allegations of a "drinking culture" inside Maine Road.

So give Steve Howey a few pints and he plays almost a full season for them scoring six goals in the process. Horses for courses and all that! Perhaps we should get Marcellino off the Paella and onto the Dog!

Joe tried the 'dog' of war on Steves' request. Pretty shabby treatment of the big guy (Joe not Steve).

Personally, I don't see much wrong with the occasional tub of yoghurt, quite healthy I've been told.

an excellent discussion on this on Radio 5 this afternoon. Had City's, then Chelsea's, fitness guys on.

At City they have individual training plans for each of the players. Through the summer they are each given an individual fitness regime to keep to, to keep them fairly fit, and stop them putting on too much weight. They are measured against this and will be fined if out of line. Ade Mafe is Chelsea's equivalent, from an athletics background. He said they had the same, with individual targets.

Who does this sort of individual analysis and setting of fitness goals for Newcastle ?

Isn't Paul Winsper supposed to be the fitness coach?

Remember Stevo's quality translation of a Gullit interview in a Dutch football mag a while back? There was plenty on how he was transforming the team into vitimin popping fitness freaks then. In fact fans' favourite Centre-Partin' was supposed to be one of the fittest professional footballers in the club if not country!

I can't imagine things have gone that far downhill on this front (stand by for correction). Also, I recall Gary Linekar speaking about Liverpool just before their UEFA final and the interviewer said they may be tired and exhausted from their long season (60+ games!). Gary said it's amazing what winning can do for tired limbs.

If we get into the habit of winning I'm sure the physio's bench will soon be gathering dust. How we get to this position is another matter...cue Esther Rancid - Doc.
