Putty Soft

Replacement of a single pane window is a task most homeowners can handle. The tools are few and the materials are inexpensive. Often the hardest part of the job is getting the old putty out of the sash. In spite of what it says on the can, putty gets hard, rock hard over time. Here is the tip. Use a heat gun to soften the putty as you work it out with a putty knife or a chisel. Be forewarned -- the heat will probably crack the glass and may char the wood if care is not taken. When using a heat gun for anything, think about fire safety first.
