Did anyone in Poes' family (or friends) try to break up the engagement between the both of them, or try to prevent the marriage from happening?

Sorry, I mean the marriage and engagement between Virginia and Poe

Yes, by family members like Neilson Poe, I believe. She was very young for one thing. Poe was a bit mistrusted and poor for another. Mrs. Clemm, I believe mainly supported him especially when he desperately pleaded. Check out a good biography. Go to www.eapoe.org for articles and references.

NR,

The only incident I am aware of was an early invitation from Neilson Poe, Edgar's cousin, for Maria Clemm and her daughter, Virginia, to come live with them in Baltimore. Panic stricken, Edgar sent a heart wrenching letter professing his love for Virginia. This all occurred well before their marriage in May 1836. Neilson did finally marry another cousin, Josephine Emily Clemm.

Regards,
