No Gav....he wanted a role within MUFC at the end of next term. He's been shown 100K and a crap job and he's thought..."feck that....PLC shite. I'm out of here all together"

PS....Rik...yer full of poo man :-)

I presume you refer to Merlin! as hes the only wizard ive heard of. Of course we'd take him hes magic!!!

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

Nothing personal Ollie....I just thought a man who says NO to Alex Ferguson joining their club must be full of something :-)

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

Robson's here for two more years and I can't see either Robson or Ferguson accepting different roles.

Ferguson wouldn't be a long term solution and I'd rather a younger man came in. Obviously if he was to prolong his managerial career by anothr 5 years then that would be different!

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

It's all irrelevant anyway. Ferg would take one look at our squad and the facilities and he'd be down the A1/A69 as soon as possible!

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

Despite Ferguson's obvious track record, I would honestly be very nervous and in two minds if he were to become manager. It's not out of envy or small mindedness, just a gut feel that he's now reaping the rewards of years and years of effort and he would neither have the time or inclination to repeat this elsewhere, and almost certainly not at Newcastle. His reputation might be able to attract some big names, but in the end ego's don't help the cause. No, if he ever started to entertain the idea of becoming our manager, we should steer well clear.

At first I thought Ferguson as manager hell yes. After reading Windy's posting I think no. You have changed my mind mate I agree with you.

Thanks for the vote of confidence HnH. Wish I could pretend it was my powers of influence, but I suspect it's more the ability to state the bleeding obvious ;-)

I have it on very good authority that SAF will be the next manager at Maine Road.

"It's all irrelevant anyway. Ferg would take one look at our squad and the facilities and he'd be down the A1/A69 as soon as possible!"

Especially if he's about to fill his pants with poo, like the last time he was in a rush!

LR, don't be crazy. Sugesting that we could posibly like to have another dour Scotsman with a resonable previous track record as our manager? How would you like it if Dalglish was touted as the next Man U manager?

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

Scotland LR, national manager, wee Broon back to coaching the kids, BTW SAF was only offered £30,000 pa to stay on a roving ambassador, it entailed 30 days work per year, PLC`s don`t you just luv em !!!

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

I'm tellin' ya..it would not surprise me if he took us to another title next year, and then joined a PL club just to shove it in the face of the PLC. I CAN NOT believe the PLC are acting like this.

Scotland gaffer huh?...probably :-)

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

I'm not sure I understand your reference to plc's in this instance Buff. If SAF was offered £30k for 30 days "work", then what is wrong with that?

The man has told them he will not renew his contract which ends at the end of next year, so they have to consider the alternatives now. He has indicated he would like to hang around on some kind of boondoggle, while recommending his No.2 as his successor. They offer him a fee of £30k for 30days work per year which is what they think it is worth, and not unreasonably IMO. He thinks £30k is an insult - but his reaction is only in relation to what he is presently earning to manage the Club. He thinks the job is worth a £1mm per year to effectively do nowt - and is frankly confusing their gratitude for what he has achieved for the Club with the value of his continuing miminal role. If he thinks a 30day 'boondoggle' is worth £1mm per year then he's lost touch with reality.

IMO, the plc are perfectly within their rights to do what they have done - when he ceases to be contracted as their Manager, he doesn't merit continuing to earn a Managers salary for doing sfa.

In relation to McClaren taking over with SAF lurking around in the background to "help where necessary" - you are old enough to recall the mess Manure got into when Sir Matt Busby retired. A succession of Managers found it impossible to manage the Club because of Busby's presence and influence within the Club - undermining everything they tried to do. It took them 15 years or so to recover from those errors. Don't you think those memories still haunt them?

They clearly aren't intending to make the same mistakes again, and without SAF's guiding hand around, presumably don't believe Steve McClaren is ready to manage Manchester United as the massive entity it has become - and they might very well be right: if they're wrong - make no mistake about it - they will be held accountable.

Clarky, I am not daft enough to discuss finance with your good self, in that subject I am the weakest link, that`s why my bank manager is my captain, sweeper and also club treasurer, more than one way to skin a cat. Agree it was a throwaway remark but one thing I am certain of is I know where LR is coming from and if we were in the same position I am sure the Geordie nation would feel the same. Apart from the success brought to Manchester by the man from the Govan Tenements, he has to my knowledge spoken out many issues that appeal to the fans but not the plc, his stand on being taken over by Sky, he wanted to give young fans greater access by reducing admission prices, He was totally against playing Saturday mornings for the benifet of TV in China and Malaysia, he wanted to be in the frame to attract the likes of Ronaldo Rivaldo, Batista, Edwards thought he was useless with money so apart from Nistleroy he had to make do and suffer jibes from director??,that he did not do enough to promote the sale of Manchester merchandise!!! In 1996 when they won the double SAF was well down the peckin order with his salary, others who have not won diddly squat were on much more, (careful Buff , getting near home) and it was only the intervention of Sir Roly Smith plc who got him bumped up to £750,000.

Yes I agree £30,000 is a lot, point took, is Gordon Milne still employed at Newcastle as Director of Football, (serious) I asked that question about 3 months ago, he never seems to get a mention, if he is what is his salary and what does he do??. Fergie has his weak points but he can point to a full trophy cabinet and say "Pick the bones out of that", that`s his strength, and with a united supporters federation backing him he cannot lose, its timed to run with the election, the man from Govan against the man from the Cheshire Stockbroker Belt,

Rik - I would love it for Dags Snr to take the reigns of Man U. I would laugh me f**king head off (my 'ordinary' head would probably laugh too...Worzel Gummidge (sp) joke there folks)

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

Buff,
To my knowledge Gordon Milne is still around. What he actually does, god (or FS) only knows.
I have no idea what salary he is on, but I heard somewhere that John Carver is picking up about £150k per year for filling a similarly uncertain 'gopher' role. Based on this, it seems reasonable to assume that Milne will be pulling down perhaps £250k.
All this raises the spectre of "croneyism" that you have frequently referred to.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

Carver was moved out of the full-time scouting role last summer to become a full-time coach. He seems to be just after Wadsworth in the pecking order.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

Well, he must be good. If YBR thinks MW is one of the top coaches around, then bein just after him must be good. 'kinnell, 6 figure numbers for that lot. I'm in the wrong job ;-)

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

C'mon Screach - you wouldn't take a pay cut even to work for the Toon! ;-{)

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

Hey Clarky, you know me. I'm all heart and the size of the pay packet doesn't matter - as long as there were big bonuses!
