Sharpton Mulls Run For Presidency

Denies Exploiting Jackson's Troubles

NEW YORK, 3:16 p.m. EDT May 20, 2001 -- The Reverend Al Sharpton is planning to run for president in 2004.

He tells Time magazine that the Democratic Party must be challenged the next time around because it didn't fight aggressively to protect voting rights in Florida.

Sharpton says the idea for a White House run came to him while he sat under a tree in Sudan during a recent fact-finding tour about slavery.

And he denies he's taking advantage of Jesse Jackson's tarnished image.

Sharpton ran for the U.S. Senate in New York in 1994 and came in third in a four-way contest in the Democratic primary -- with 25 percent of the vote.

In 1997, he took 32 percent of the vote in a Democratic mayoral primary.
