Glass and Gallagher

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Both linked with Coventry, all I ever asked for Glass was a run of 5 games on the trot which may not happen, I think 3 was his limit. The penny may have dropped to late but if one looks at Stephs last TG report it appears that a wee bit of time was spent actually feeding the ball out wide to the left, As long as Speed is playing the Left Side will be neglected. If Gallagher is willing to do a year as a squad play we should keep him , every club needs a Gallagher. Most see all footballers differently , the views on here on these two have in the majority been positive and united.

Glass played Gullit's first 12 games on the bounce scoring 2 goals. He then started 11 out of the next 16 (came off the bench in 2 of the ones he didn't start) but only scored 1 more goal before missing several months with a broken leg. Bobby has only given him 2 starts in a row twice. He has allowed him a total of 6 starts and 14 substitute appearances during which Glass has notched up 4 goals (1.5 starts per goal).

Of those 6 games he has started for Bobby we have won 5 and drawn 1. This is no accident. Not only is Glass a much needed goal threat from midfield, but we are quite simply a better side with balance.

buff, IMHO we should keep Glass, when watching the team over the last few games(when Glass has started) the team looks more balanced...and takes the pressure of Solano on the right, and as Screacher has commented on a previous thread gives the likes of Bassedas more options when moving forward...plus Glass scores goals, but after he was subbed yesterday I think that was the last we have seen of him in a black and white shirt. Thats another point what did eveyone think of the new strip?...I think it's crap!

-- Anonymous, May 20, 2001

We should keep them both - we could well spend 2x £4-5mm for squad replacements and find the replacements are not as good as these two. If Glass had just a tad more pace he'd be really top class.

The new strip is a bloody disgrace. It's nothing like a NUFC shirt, and is mostly black. As someone has commented elsewhere, you can't see the name/numbers. Yet another commercially-focused screw up.

-- Anonymous, May 20, 2001

Oh yeah buff, forget to mention Kevin Gallacher...excellent player and A real 100% player, He got another fantastic reception yesterday and he deserved it...no question. BUT he is not what we should be looking at for next season, Gallacher's best days are behind him we need to move on!

-- Anonymous, May 20, 2001

Keep 'em both - even if only for 12 months. KG would be happy. WOuld SG get a better offer anywhere else?

-- Anonymous, May 20, 2001

Screacher, I don't think Gallacher would be happy with the role he would be playing next season IF we kept him on, Glass is a bit different and it depends on what players Bobby is going to bring in this summer I.E a left sided midfielder/winger , and yes Glass will probs get a better offer OF FIRST TEAM FOOTBALL which he should of got from NUFC for the season just passed.

-- Anonymous, May 20, 2001

Thanx all, Softie I was fishing for you to answer statiscally , I was for Bobby to give him a 5 in a row chance as his problems and future were linked on his opinion , anyway goal and match statistics were very revelant. I would like to discuss Marty`s point, from a team plan angle, he states and I agree, "The inclusion of Glass on the left , enabled Solano to receive more space on the right" , okay great, what would happen when Dyer returns ? and we have recruited an extra striker (Bridges), giving us Shearer, Cort , Bridges ,Amoebi

Can Solano or Dyer play in the same team ? without playing one of them out of their favoured position , which is ???????

-- Anonymous, May 20, 2001

Marty - even the likes of Paul Scholes, Sheri Tedingham and Andrew Cole don't get an uninterrupted run in the EPL. I can't see Glass going to another EPL team, but I do believe he could play a major part at SJP next season. Undoubtedly he would get better remuneration than in the SPL.

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

Not sure if they are totally irrelevant Buff, if you picked 5 NUFC games out of the hat this season you'd do pretty well to come up with 4 wins and a draw. The scoring record for me has some bearing when people defend Gary Speed solely on his scoring record. No way could Glass be considered to have had a run in the side this season to build up confidence and "get his eye in", yet he has managed to score a few anyway. His real strength as a scoring option is that he takes up those positions at the edge of the box and waits for a defensive header to drop short or a little back pass and has a proven ability to crack them in from 25 yards. Spedd has spent the season hitting row Z while Rob Lee has managed to get it as far as the keeper a couple of times.

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

Is that our keeper in a rather hurredly way?

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

Keep them both, especially Gally. Selling them makes no sense at all.

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

Keep them both. Gallacher could show a few what commitment means. Offer him a coaching role when he finishes playing. WHY are we looking at a left sided Peruvian when we've got Glass??

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

Is everyone abosultely sure that Glass, once he's fixed his contract, won't disappear again without trace into the depths of the squad? I don't think his ability has ever really been in doubt (perhaps his physical strength?), but are we confident about his attitude? Tricky decision for Bobby and unfortunately not enough time to really make an assessment.

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

I rather take a chance with Glass then with another South American.

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

Glass has only been excluded so that Bobby could persist with his either/or approach to wide players. He'd much rather play a wide player on either right or left and then have a forward on the opposite flank ready to tuck inside at every opportunity. With Nobby being number 1 choice, Glass has hardly had a look-in except on those frustratingly rare occasions when Bobby plays a proper 4 accross the middle and we look like a completely different team. Is this the England situation all over again? Saw some things at the training ground on Friday which have me deeply concerned over unity between management and players. Hopefully a couple of key transfers (out) will stop the rot, but that didn't work for the last manager.

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

Don't you think that with the present squad, if we played with two wide men, we'd get slaughtered by the likes of Arsenal or anyone with a powerful central midfielder. Dyer makes a huge addition to our midfield due as much as anything to his workrate, but we have nobody with physical presence, pace, mobility and energy bossing thing in the middle.
Softie. who are the main creators of unrest at training? Speed again? Any others?

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

I think the fact that we got murdered 5-0 by Arsenal with an unorthodox/incomprehensible/experimental/barking mad lineup and drew 0-0 when we played 4-4-2 answers that one best of all :-)

Best to let sleeping dogs lie wrt revolt in the ranks. Would never have dreamed that that training session could have led to an emphatic victory. The sharp eyed would have noticed that certain of our players weren't overjoyed when we scored....then again, knowing who to keep an eye on helped. Summer could be very interesting, but if a couple of faces are still here next season and we don't have a great start, it's going to get bloody. Again.

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

Ahh come on Softie, without a tape of the match we will all have to draw our own conclusions. Wouldn't it be fair to give us the information so that we don't make a mistake and barrack the wrong player? ;0)

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2001

FAir enough ;-) I suppose the two games did rather illustrate why balance is often a better defensive option than flooding midfield or wherever you perceive to be the oppositions main area of threat.

Newcastle United have given Stephen Glass the chance to stay at St James's Park - after initially giving him a free transfer.

And now the Scottish international is mulling over United's offer of a new deal.

But there are plenty of other teams interested in Glass, including Rangers, Coventry City and Bradford City.

United decided to give Glass a free transfer along with fellow Scot Kevin Gallacher and midfielder Des Hamilton, while striker Daniel Cordone has been allowed to return home to Argentina.

Glass has been plagued by injuries in the past couple of seasons and he only started six games in the campaign just ended.

But the former Aberdeen winger has performed well in the matches in which he has taken part and Bobby Robson has now asked the player - who will celebrate his 25th birthday on Friday - if he wants to stay at St James's Park.

Glass has always insisted that he wants to stay and the ball is very much in his court at the moment.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

Journo scumbags need shooting. If they can't be arsed to find out whether Glass was injured or not then step aside and give somebody who gives a damn about the truth a chance to write about it. Seething.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

13 reserve appearances (out of a possible 22), 6 starts for the first team, 10 substitute appearances and 3 times unused as sub. Considering as how he wasn't able to play in both reserves and first team at the same time, how does he fit "a plague of injuries" in?!?!?!

Amateurish, mendacious, slap-dash bags of shite!

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

Cheers Softie for giving us the real deal on this matter.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

It's right there in the public domain. The very paper this shyster works at store tons of this information. They are going to be putting out a 60 page special with all the stats and match reports from the whole season some time this week. How hard can it be? At least pretend to have enough interest in the club you are paid to write about to research your stories.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

Not sure how official this story is. It is from Sky Sports.

Newcastle United have offered Scottish midfielder Stephen Glass the chance to continue his St James' Park career. Glass was expected to be among those shown the door at Newcastle, but the former Aberdeen ace has impressed Bobby Robson so much that the original decision to grant a free transfer has been overturned. Rangers, Coventry City, Dundee United and Bradford City have been linked with the Dundee-born ace, who is set to celebrate his 25th birthday on Wednesday (May 23). Glass has been plagued by injuries in the past couple of seasons and he only started six games in the current season, but was on the scoresheet in the Magpies' last game of the season against Aston Villa. United had earlier decided to release Glass along with fellow Scot Kevin Gallacher and midfielder Des Hamilton, while striker Daniel Cordone has been allowed to return home to Argentina.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

Ooh - I thought this was a "spot the ball" competition ;-)

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

And did you spot it?

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

That fella by Glass' right thigh looks a bit miserable though!

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

Shouldn't have had that curry last night.

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

at least you can read the ntl on the front of his shirt, if he'd been looking the other way you would have seen his number as ¦¦¦¦¦, if you were lucky

-- Anonymous, May 22, 2001

It's not entirely coincidental that you can see the NTL logo MacBeth on the appalling non-NUFC shirt, that actually looks more like a Grimsby FC shirt.

It would serve their incompetent @rses right if Stephen Glass were now to give them the vertical digit, and sign for someone else. For the sake of his career - and let's remember he was in the Scotland squad immediately following his transfer here - he'd be well advised to go elsewhere.
If he decides to stay here I fear he will inevitably suffer more of the same treatment next season.

The Ronny reckon that we have only offered SG a one year contract. Pretty insulting IMO - if I was the lad I'd definitely go now. Either he's good enough to warrant being made a serious offer, or, he isn't good enough and should be released; he shouldn't be messed around like this.

Does anyone know what issue the club have with SG. Do they simply not rate him as a player or are there concerns regarding either fitness, application or attitude?

-- Anonymous, May 23, 2001

Grimsby's shirts are significantly different - ok, black & white stripes but not that similar to our 2001/02 kit http://www.gtfc.co.uk/

Reminds me more of an older Juve top

-- Anonymous, May 23, 2001

The Ronnie now reckons that Glass will turn down the pathetic offer of a one year contract and will leave the club.

Well all I can say is that we had better sign Bonvin pretty quick or seal the deal on a new left winger.

-- Anonymous, May 25, 2001

Can't blame the lad, be sorry to see him go tho'. BTW I see the Ronnie are still blathering on about his "injury-plagued season". T*ss*rs.

-- Anonymous, May 25, 2001

Chaps I work with chatted to Dyer and one or two of the others at the Soton match. Apparently, Shearer is a big fan of Glass and had repeatedly urged BR to play him. Interesting.

-- Anonymous, May 25, 2001

Shearer seems to be hell bent on having two wingers. He always says how important Solano is and even Cort has come out and said such.

If Shearer ever takes charge we'll have a team like Blackburn did when they won the title with Shearer.

Maybe not a bad thing!!

-- Anonymous, May 25, 2001

That'd be Ant and Dec'y then? :))

You managed to get any dirt on cat yet Dan? ;))

-- Anonymous, May 25, 2001

These new signings had better be a bit f**king special...

-- Anonymous, May 25, 2001

Word is that Gordon Strachan is keen to sign both Kevin Gallacher and Stephen Glass for Coventry. About £4-5 million in international-class talent for absolutely nowt - care of the NUFC Benevolent Foundation.

-- Anonymous, May 26, 2001

Come on Clarky, be fair. KG has just about reached the top of his potential (indeed, is probably well on the way down.) I don't think Coventry will bounce straight back, tho I could be wrong. Even if I am, KG would have a maximum of one year in the EPL if he goes to Cov. No other EPL team was interested, so it is fitting he should drop down a division to help them gain promotion.

SG is a diffferent case. He's a lot younger, but hasn't realised his potential at NUFC for whatever reason. I though a one-year contract was OK. If the rumours about him being a "misfit" are true, then the ball is fairly and squarely in his court to put that right. Do the biz in the first six months and give him an extended contract. I'm not sure a move to the likes of Coventry would be a good idea for him. Nor do I see him holding down a regular place at angers, in what is a much poorer league (with the exception of the top two).

-- Anonymous, May 26, 2001

Screacher,

You may be right about Gallacher. However, let's reassess that issue early next season in consideration of our close season acquisitions. Gallacher was a proven commodity, and a decent squad player. If we buy a top striker for £10 million, releasing Gallacher at this time amy well have been the correct decision. However, we could pay £3-4 million for a squad player and find him inferior to KG.

Regarding Glass, you say he hasn't realised his potential. Do you really believe he's had a fair crack of the whip under BR, and been given a real opportunity to prove his potential?
If, as you suggest, the ball is "fairly & squarely in his court" how does he go about proving himself if he can't get a game? Does Glass strike you as a trouble-maker, or a blerk with an attitude?

The contract offer he was made was a sheer insult, and I hope he goes elsewhere and proves NUFC badly mistaken - he won't be the first , or I suspect the last.
Just think about other LW's around the PL and Nationwide, compare them with SG and what do you think he is worth? £4 million? £2 million? Yet again, I'm saying if we spend £10 million on a proven top-class LW then fine. However, again we could spend £3-4 million on a "player with potential" and get a player who is nowhere near as good a player as Stephen Glass.

-- Anonymous, May 26, 2001

To be honest, I hoped when both left the picth past Saturday that they were to be offered a new contract. I believe KG could play a squad role but should not be considered as first choice - of course that would depend on the recovery powers of Messrs Shearer and Dyer.

WRT to Stephen Glass, I do not believe he has had a fair crack of the whip - until the end of the season. SInce we were safe from the "R" word, I think YBR tried to assess him as best he could. Clearly, he thinks he is worth holding on to, but presumably has some niggling doubts.

If SG can get a better deal elsewhere, then so be it. For me, he has shown enough to warrant another chance - but I heard rumours that he is "not settled". Of course, this could cover a whole host of things of which I am not party. However, if he truly believes he has the potential to make it in the EPL, I think NUFC offers him the best opportunity, and hence my comment about re-assessing the contract after 6 months. If not, then thank you SG - you possibly saved us from the unthinkable with some critical goals.

-- Anonymous, May 26, 2001

enters the debate late.......... I think letting both or either of them go is a mistake. With KG we have someone who would be a very good squad player, someone who gives their all. He could also pass on his knowledge to our 'youngsters'. I thought that YBR was going to offer him another year and I think that it would have been good value. Glass is a different liquid holder. There is obviously something 'not right' with him and YBR otherwise we'd have seen more of him. Replacing these two is going to cost a lot of money, that we don't seen to have.

-- Anonymous, May 26, 2001

.......my point precisely TGjnr.
What's more we could spend £5-7 million to replace two guys who are leaving for nowt and find the replacements aren't even as good.

-- Anonymous, May 27, 2001

I think with Gallacher, Bobby realises that he won't get many, if any chances in the NUFC team next season, so as a friend it is better to let him go.

Say we sign Bridges or someone else, that would be on top of Shearer, Cort, Ameobi, Lua Lua etc.

Although it could be argued that Gallacher is better than some of the above, he is on the way down, and his goals to games ratio isn't the best. Yeah, he puts work in, but so does Warren Barton. As an asset, worth having, but if he wants to play football (as I suspect all footballers with the exception of Elena would want to do) he is better off in Division 1. Good luck to him, wherever he goes.

-- Anonymous, May 27, 2001

Gav - spot on, mate. The Cat hangs around the office sometimes, do you want me to leave your pic and number lying around? Gnarf gnarf. Divvent rate her much mesel.

-- Anonymous, May 28, 2001

There's an article in The Journal this morning quoting Aaron Hughes saying what a good player Stephen Glass is and how he really hopes he stays. Says he is liked and highly respected by the other players as one of the best left wingers around.
The mystery deepens!

-- Anonymous, May 28, 2001

This one's so deep even Sherlock Holmes spat the dummy and took his ball home

-- Anonymous, May 28, 2001

I've been trawling through last season to work out where the problem started and it appears to have been Coventry away on Sep 6 last year. Glass had his second start in a row after coming off the bench and scoring against Derby at SJP. In this game, however, he was booked and then hauled off shortly after half time to make way for Gallacher who scored. Since he only had occasional substitute appearances for the next 25 games, I can only assume that this is where the problem stems from. Possibly the young man was far from impressed at being subbed or the booking was for something stupid, but this hasn't counted against Nobby, Dyer or Speed has it?

All a bit odd. I say again: these Summer signings will need to be a bit tasty. Bobby stands or falls by this decision for me, it's as plain and simple as that.

Selling Ferguson because he was injury prone and replacing him with someone who spent just as long on the physio's couch was perhaps unfortunate. Getting rid of Domi by refusing to start him in his proper position and replacing him with someone who has yet to look like anything more than a 1st Division player was ill-advised. But making us play lopsided all season when we had an excellent left winger available was mind boggling. Offering that player an insulting contract and not signing a top-notch alternative will be a case of gross negligence to my mind and I'll be calling for the man's head.

-- Anonymous, May 28, 2001

Courteously respect that we cross that bridge as and when it actually gets built. Until then lets not give the hacks any tinder upon which to burn an effigy of Bobby eh ?

-- Anonymous, May 28, 2001

I feel if Gullit had done the same to say a Robert Lee the place would have gone beserk, well after Gullit left anyway.

I feel Glass was taken off after losing the plot and looking as though he would be sent off if he wasn't subbed. A bit Ginola like ?? Maybe he's a bad influence and he's passed this dummy spitting attitude on to Gary Speed who later in the season perfected it.

-- Anonymous, May 28, 2001

Aaron is in one of the papers talking about how popular Glass is with the other players and how rare a commodity a left-footed player is...

-- Anonymous, May 28, 2001

Glass is still very average in my eyes. Coventry looks like being a good move for the kid.

-- Anonymous, May 28, 2001

Can I send Gary Speed to Coventry too?

-- Anonymous, May 28, 2001

what woudl Coventry want with Speed ?

-- Anonymous, May 28, 2001

Off the point but this reminds me of the Journal panellist who said that his only regret about Domi going back to France was that he hadn't taken Warren Barton with him.
