Pruning cherry trees.

I have two dwarf cherry trees (not sure of the type). This year most of their growth seems to be "up". Should I be pruning them so that they grow more horizontal like apple trees or should I let them go their own way!!? By the way, one tree has some blossoms on it.

I think you can make them any shape you want, but only prune them when they are dormant. We tend to cut off crossing brabches, and leave the rest to nature,

Cherry trees naturally grow 'up'.Dwarfs require less pruning.I'm just growing dwarf trees myself. I'll have to play it by ear.

David's advice on cross branches is good. Some trees you may need to shape a little initially, like cut off lower branches that will be a pain down the road,Also branches with a sharp V that will become potential wind damage.Try to envision the tree grown and how you need it to look, and take care of potential problems now, while branches are small and wounds will heal faster.I take it these are young trees? Prune when dormant.Peaches are the exception to this.

Don't cut limbs flush. No longer recommended. There is a wound collar at the base of each limb.Leave that.Promotes healing.

There was supposed to be a website showing all this. It's a case of seeing is better than saying.Check CS archives or do a web search.I did not bother to bookmark it as I have publications instead.

My State's extension service has afruit tree pruning publication.I can't imagine that Missouri doesn't.Isn't that where you live?

Where are you in MO that the cherry is only just now blooming!Mine here in KY bloomed a month ago.You must be in the northern part of the state. I didn't think you were that far behind.

Thanks for the info, guys! I should have mentioned that these trees are 2 yrs. old. This is the first year that they've done any growing as the deer did a great job of "pruning" them not long after I planted them!! So I'll wait til fall to do any trimming. Sharon...I'm in Maine, probably a few hours drive from Missour:)!! Our cherry trees and peach trees are just blossoming now in my area. Dogwoods and redbuds are long gone by. The apple trees are also in full bloomand very fragrant.
