Just A Tip

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Xeney : One Thread

Have you guys seen this site?

If you're a complete chickenshit, you can go there and send someone an anonymous e-mail telling them that their website sucks. Here's what I got:

beth@xeney.com, someone has asked us to tell you that your website is bad. Please do not be offended. Just a Tip is only trying to help.

Here is what the person sending this tip said:

This is regarding your personal home page.

This person described your site as useless, dull, and outdated.

Your site has poorly written text.
Not that I'm disputing any of that, but I'm just trying to figure out what purpose this Just A Tip thing serves, except to assist chickenshits in being chickenshits. If I have a broken link or you're getting an error message, I would assume you wouldn't have a problem just telling me that, right? And if you needed an anonymous service to do that, you'd be kind of pathetic.

On the other hand, if you just want to tell me I'm boring and I write badly, you have one of two motives: either you're trying to be helpful and keep me from embarrassing myself, or you want to make me cry. If it's the former, presumably you would be kind of pathetic if you couldn't tell me that directly, too.

So I guess the only purpose of Just A Tip is to make people cry.

Damn. I wish I'd thought of that. That's a hell of a service. But then, it didn't make me cry, so it's not very effective. Maybe it would be better if they sent anonymous e-mails saying, "Just a tip: your mom doesn't really love you. Please don't be offended!"

Ever gotten one of these?

Actually, I once used that site to send my ex an anonymous email informing him he was a bad fisherman.

I don't know whether he's ever even been fishing, but I enjoyed sending it anyway.

But you can also tell people nice things from the site. You can tell them they have excellent taste in underwear!

I'm easily amused.

Heh. Okay, okay. Thank you to the person who sent me a "tip" to tell me I have a lovely garden.

Why do I have a feeling that you are going to be receiving a lot of those tips today?

-- Anonymous, May 18, 2001

I don't know ... I sort of think everyone died today. This place is dead, and no one's updated their journals, either.

Oh, and what am I, chopped liver? Just for that I take back what I said about your garden and declare you a turkey.

Mmmmmmm turkey. I got dibs on the breast.

Now that I have a real job and don't just talk on the phone all day, it makes it much harder to get over here!

I think they have one for bad personal hygiene, too. It's been a while since I've been there, though. Always fun to send to coworkers.

well, for me, my job randomly decides that this is a forbidden site and blocks it entirely for days at a time, which is why I haven't been posting. sob. It's a good thing I can get in now, because otherwise being the only person left in my department, lonely, overworked, and sad at 8pm on a Friday, would be even worse.

Anyway, the place I used to work for, we abused the Just A Tip. We told lots of people about their breath, personal hygiene, and attitude. But that was awhile ago.

I've been busy, but also have had a lot of trouble accessing Greenspun in the last couple of days...another reason to look forward to the new forum!

-- Anonymous, May 18, 2001

Just a Tip is officially successful, because *someone* called me a turkey and made me cry.

Yeah, Greenspun has been all wacky and annoying lately. We'll never beat the Heath girls this way.

Rachel: I'm so glad you're here!

I wish i had known about that site before.

I've been around sporadically today because i suddenly realized that once i start school my apartment will not be as immaculately clean as it has been for 2 months. It's easy to clean when you aren't working and are bored out of your mind. Once i have studying to do and papers to write, the place will fall apart.

I also realized just now i won't be able to pop in here all day like i used to - i'll be in a school with no internet access. ACK!

God. I'm going to have withdrawl. But for the next 5 days i'm here! Let's beat the Heath girls!

Just a tip -- effing greenspun.com was down all of Thursday and most of Friday. I can't get in on weekends because all Westchester is online and my modem runs at about 2k per sec.

Yeah, I know, Tom. It sucked. The good news is that after months of nagging (well, okay, I nagged two or three times), I finally got my host to set up the database for the new forum. So beta testing should start happening soon, possibly by the end of the week. Jeremy finishes finals tomorrow, but he's going backpacking next weekend. I'll see how wiped out he is before I give you guys a definite timeline.
