Ohio's summer electric supply 'tight but adequate'

A report from the Ohio Consumers' Counsel says the state should make it through the summer without power shortages. However, if abnormally hot and humid weather hits, or if new generating plants don't open in time, the state could see shortages similar to those experienced in 1998 and 1999.

The OCC met with the state's four major investor-owned electric utilities, including Cincinnati's Cinergy Corp., to review their ability to meet customer demand this summer. The utilities project they will have 9 percent to 18 percent more electricity than they will need to meet demand. Cinergy said it is expecting a 12 percent to 15 percent reserve supply of electricity.

The utilities also said they are encouraging voluntary conservation, importing power from outside the region and providing financial incentives to large-volume users to reduce their demand.
