The best, most careful answer to this controversy is at www.eapoe.org. Theories abound so pick what seems reasonable without getting dogmatic. I guess you could say tragedy caught up with him.

E.A.POE was an alcoholic as well as an opium addict. This is said to have been the cause of his premature death.Due to the lack of advanced medical knowledge this was not proven. It is now prophosized that the cause of his death was hydrophobia.

There was a political game, popular around his time, where people would find a drunk, dress him/her like an unpopular politician, and beat on them... Since Poe was (there is a good chance he was, he may not have been though) a diabetic, he would get drunk within the first few drinks - but it alcohol could also kill him. *Some people say* that he was drunk that night in 1849, and they played this game with him, unintentionally killing him, leaving him in the alley to be found later on. That would explain why he was found with someone else's clothes on - and the alcohol in his system. If you're wondering where I got this information, it was told to me by the tour- guide at the Poe Museum in Virginia. (It's an awesome place, Poe lived there for a short time - check it out!) There are many different theories surrounding Poe's death - this is just another one that *could have happened*. Hope I helped!!
