Though he was not match fit, I would like to see Patrick Berger in a black n white shirt, one bad ball when he come on, was incisive, passing ability good, and I felt he had a presence on the pitch. Can anyone tell me what the following have to offer, Carragher, Murphy, Heskey, just interested . BTW Contra for swop with Marcellino , case of need by both outfits.

Agree on both Berger and Contra Buff - they would both look very tidy in B&W.

I actually believe Owen is carrying the 'pool right now - it is surely no coincidence that all the defences he has played against recently have struggled - ours, Arsenal's and Alaves.

Heskey (IMHO) is $hite and last night just confirmed it, the way he jumped over the ball (while supposedly standing in the wall), when the Spanish scored from the free kick, thus unsighting Westerwald was real schoolboy stuff.

I wanted the scousas to win but they were damn lucky last night, their 'famed' defence were very poor esp. againt crosses and corners, the headed goals they conceded were unbelievable!

Aye, I would love to see Berger here, I don't see him having a major future at Liverpool. Manchester United are apparently interested in him so if we wanted him we'd have a battle for his signature.

I think they should get into the Champions League, but I think they'd struggle. They struggled this year against decent teams - look at the Roma game where the Italians were denied three stone-wall penalties.

Yeah right Bud Wiser, Heskey is shite.

None of the Alaves players was very tall it seemed to me, but they seemed to win a load of balls in the air against guys quite a bit taller, even if the headed goals aren't taken into account.

Pity they went to pieces at the kick off, it would have been very interesting if they'd gone 2 up, I'm not sure Liverpool could have clawed their way back.

Still, the way it went was good for the game as a spectacle.

Does anybody know if there was anybody there from SJP doing a bit of spying and would they have seen any Salaves players worth a second look ?

Were the managers stupid last night ?

The Alaves coach watches his leading goal scorer get two in 5 minutes to get them back to 3-3, the guy's worrying the Liverpool defenders and he subs him for a midfield player. Playing for a draw ? Liverpool score again and suddenly Alaves are knackered cos they've got no one to score an equaliser.

Never mind, Houllier rises to the challenge and takes Owen off (already got Heskey off for Fowler) and replaces him with Berger. Great idea. Well until the defenders go awol and suddenly it's extra time and Liverpool have only one of their three possible forwards on the pitch.

Strange.

It worked for Houllier though!

not sure it did really, I'll be very impressed with his knowledge if he saw an own goal winning it for them

and .... question time, what would happen if they'd gone to pens and got to 9 all, or a draw after Alaves' 9 players have had a go each? Alaves would have to go back to their first (best) taker, and Liverpool would be down to their tenth best ? (I know the answer, just wondered whether any one else did).

I was thinking the exact same thing last night MacB but hadn't a clue what the answer was/is.

Wouldn't LFC have nominated 9 takers and gone from there? Not sure if one of them would have had to have been the keeper.

I was hoping they'd lose it 4-3 in the last minute so I could have said "THAT'S how it feels"

look who they played to win thier treble.......Rotherham, Palace, Wycombe, Tranmere, Alvibaba, Birmingham, A relegated City, a shite Leeds at the time, a crap Chelsea, a CHEATED Roma, a knackered Barca..etc etc.

Penalties, dodgy refs, own goals.

Yep...they're BACK!
