The reason for Speed's recent rants?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Gary Speed admits he could be forced to call time on his Newcastle career.

The Welsh midfielder has one year left on his current St James' Park contract but claims the club have not told him whether they want him to stay or go.

"I haven't got a clue about my future at Newcastle right now," Speed told bigfanof.com.

"Things are very much up in the air. It's very unsettling for me and I'm not very happy with my current situation. It's never nice for a player of my age not to know where he's going to be next season."

Speed has been linked with newly-promoted Fulham but says he has not been approached and is happy to remain on Tyneside.

Speed added: "Fulham are a good side and I'm sure they'll do well in the Premiership, but I want to stay where I am.

"I've said before that I want to stay with Newcastle for the forseeable future but unfortunately that decision isn't down to me.

"If Newcastle want me then I'm more than happy to stay, but if they decide they want to sell me then unfortunately there's nothing I can do."

I couldn't give a crap what he does either way....

If it means we can keep hold of Kieron Dyer I'd find a buyer for him.

Scores more goals than Dyer

Makes more goals than Dyer

Less injury prone than Dyer

Worth less than Dyer

We'll sell Dyer

Speeds goinbg to BLACKBURN, WITH THE KID Jansen coming to Newcastle as a makeweight

Kieron Dyer has scored 6 goals this season, 5 in the league and 1 in the Worthy Cup

Gary Speed has scored 6 goals this season, 5 in the league and 1 in the Worthy Cup

Considering Speed has played virtually all season, a noteable achievement, I would say Dyer would have gone on to score about ten goals. Dyer is the greater asset. His value will not deteriorate as long as he still has a decent time on his contract. Speed's value will be ever diminishing and I would suggest that if ever there was a good time to sell it is now.

Sorry, but "would have scored" is not admissable as evidence. This was the ruling of the bbs Kangaroo Court during the trial of Mr Ferguson, D.

speed is not my favourite player, though last year he pulled out the stops and did the biz. but *risking trouble* i´d sell him, after all we can't drop bollocks can we?

I'm still on Speeds side....he's a helluva goalscoring midfielder...more of what we need instead of those poncy lightweights....

Speed does more work off the ball than any other player we've ever had, well probably since Geoff Nulty anyway. The problem is we have too many polayers who are good off the ball and no bugger who's any good with it

MAcB, do we really put in a lot of work off the ball? Defensively or offensively? It's something not easy to judge unless you're there, so I'll take the regulars' word for it. But we always seem so hurried when in possession - the only time we seem to create some space is once in a blue moon when we ping 3 or 4 tricky first time passes together.

I say we keep him for the Cup final at the Millenium Stadium next year... at least someone will know what the bejeeses their on aboot...

Could explain his whinging, but definitely does not excuse it. He should shut his trap and play to the best of his ability. He's not the only one to be uncertain of his Toon future. Haven't noticed Gallacher spitting his dummy, and he's been unsure of his future all season. Even Goma generally managed to give his best when not injured. Speed is useful to keep around another season, but only if he's prepared to work hard.

He'll be available for a free transfer at the end of next season so unless we give him a contract for another two seasons we should take the money.

We have to keep him unless we sign another proven battling goal scoring midfielder in the summer. I don't think much of having a rotation of Acuna and Bassedas or the occasionally fit Lee to take that mantle.

IMO he's gone from zero (missing the ball completely away at the Serrant-Everton game) to hero (13 goals last season, 2nd top scorer).

I have read rumours that we are lining up a bid for Derby's Seth Johnson, should we be able to offload Speed for decent money. Johnson would cost around £6million but we would face competition from a host of other Premiership clubs I suspect.

Johnson would be a great signing IMHO.

I think we should cash in on Speed now. I'm not one of Bobby's 'jerks' as I reckon we should definitely keep Shearer, Lee and Barton, but to me Speed is the major bottleneck in us bringing through a more creative, effective midfield. Speed scores a few goals and is generally competant in most things, but in return he's seldom great. Thing is he's very reliable (fitness and contribution) so he'll get a game as long as he's with us. We should be playing Dyer or Bassedas +1 in the middle of the park next season and the +1 needs to be a better player than Speed. Lee can do it for a few games next year but we all know his time is limited so someone who can tackle and pass and control the middle of the park is what we need.

....That and a left sided midfielder, a left back, a striker, a centre back, a replacement for Solano (if he goes) and a pair of tartan slippers for Bobby. (joke!)

Speed is no Patrick Viera, but there are at least two South Americans midfielders I would off-load in preference to him him, only one of who was playing last night.

As we have found to our cost, good midfield players are very difficult to get hold of, and unless Bobby is able to use GS as a makeweight in a deal that brings us someone younger and better - for instance Seth Johnson, who would be a terrific signing - it would IMO be very dangerous to let him go. For one thing, he very rarely misses a game.
