How Long Are Your Nails?

Here is a rule of thumb for selecting the right nail length. Generally the nail length should be 2 1/2 times the thickness of the wood you are nailing through. Another common practice would be to use 16d nails when nailing through 2x material and 8d nails when nailing through 1x material. Remember if the work is to be exposed to the weather or in a damp location, galvanized nails or better should be used.

What fingernails? I type, play piano (badly), garden, fix broken things, and move furniture. Any fingernails longer than a few mms gets broken or torn off quickly, so I keep them very short. Many of the younger guys have longer nails (and hair!) than I.
