I wonder if this lad escaped the attention of our local scouts or did his family move south before he started playing football?

WIMBLEDON have fought off competition from Premiership champions Manchester United for the services of highly-rated youngster John Burwood. The 17-year-old, Newcastle-born defender decided to join the new intake of youngsters at Selhurst Park and turned his back on a scholarship offered to him by The Red Devils, citing a better chance of of first team football as his reason to snub Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

"He had the opportunity to join Manchester United, and even had a scholarship sent to him by recorded delivery but he declined," Dons Academy director Roger Smith said.

"Obviously it must have been tempting when you think of the Theatre Of Dreams and all the glamour of a club like United, but the bottom line is that he felt he would get a better chance of breaking into the first team here and we were delighted with that."
