POL Annan: Give poorest nations a chance

The world's poorest countries must be given the chance to compete on equal terms with the developed world, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has told a major conference in Brussels.
Opening the week-long gathering of the 49 poorest nations - the third of its kind - Mr Annan said that conflict and the threat of Aids had made things worse, but that developing countries needed to be able to sell their goods abroad into open markets in order to grow

r Annan said Europe is costing Africa $670m a year by imposing unnecessary health standards of farm produce
The aflatoxin fungus can cause liver cancer, but the levels demanded by Europe of African imports are tighter than international standards required by the World Health Organisation.
