A blunt point of view on this summers buying policy

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Don't buy anyone, UNLESS...

Simply put, if we buy, it increasingly seems to be on below average toss.

Sidestep this by not actually buying anyone, unless... they are World class. Not easy, but, hey, where is the ambition?

Sorry Sikora and that Ivory coast guy, or that money grabbing Turkish guy, i'd rather not see you in our team.

Call me grumpy, but i can forsee another influx of garbage.

Carrick , Larsson and Van Bronckhurst yes please, but its as likely as the moon is cheese.

The trouble is with such a pessimistic view and level of expectation on the incoming players they are judged too early and not made to feel welcome by the fans etc.

Kieron Dyer is the main man but does he have a song for him? An instantly recognisable tribute which he can relate to and therefore develop such an affinity for the club.

I am thinking of the simple way in which the Arsenal fans have taken to Patrick Viera and their song for him, Viera-ooh-ohhh or whatever.

Viera now seems the real Arsenal man and looks likely to take over Mr Arsenal from Tony Adams.

It begs the question do the fans have any real affinity for any of the players currently playing? The only one I can think of is Rob lee and that song is simple enough.

We have as big a part to play in the development and induction of any new players.

Kieron, Kieron Dyer Kieron Dyer on the wi-ing.

Or is that just wishful thinking of where we'd like to see him?? Fair point DeB. You could say the same about most. I remember being at Goodison when Rush scored (yes, I could hardly believe it) in the FAC a few seasons back. There was alomost panic among the away support - "We don't have a song for him (The old Dudley Moore classic "Goodebye" might have been appropriate). Eventualy they came up with a re-hash of the "...he get's the ball and scores a goal".

The only decent addition to the repertoire has been "Do the Ameobi". Sadly, it was sung more often at Anfield than any other lauding a particular player - and he wasn't even on the pitch at the time.

It has been a missing link for a few years now and if I think to the limited times in the past couple of years when I've actually been at matches I can only think of songs for Shearer and Lee.

They have to earn that respect but there are playes at the club who deserve some kind of adulation.

We shouldn't be concentrating on the criticism of so many players but concentrating on fostering a relationship with the fans. They will have more respect for us and will perhaps put a bit more effort in for us.

Singing sections would help but there's not much chance of that.....more chance of me winning the lottery methinks...

Perhaps just need the one song for all the off-the-shelf makeweights. Something suitably MOR. How about 10cc.
Life is a Dan Cordone
Served up with ...well we know what's been served up recently
Or Wham? 'Cheap south americans for me. They're on Tyneside. That's enough for anyone. All that's missing is ability. But don't worry, there's no future.
Forgive the ramblings :-(

But Gav, at away games, we are the singing section. That is condition of entry, yet despite the constant signing, very little is directed at specific players. More often negative comments about the Mackems or the oppos. Dunno about you lot, but for me, supporting my team is a positive thing, not one aimed at purely denegratingt your opponents or main "rivals".

Screach, if they did something positive in a game then they would get sung about! oh it's all too much for me....I need to take some anti depressants and lie down for 5 years...

Carl Cort's definitely worthy of something. He might not be the finished article, but he's got the goals so far. However, it's amazing how often we blame ourselves for the team's performance - along the lines of 'we obviously didn't encourage them enough' (just a general drift of argument not something anybody specifically said). The songs have been missing because the spark that gets them going is missing. I'm sure it really wouldn't take that much, but the onus is with the players first and foremost.

Cmon, Screach...the Graham Rix song was a classic. ;-))

Aye Ciara, I don't disagree about the f***in' paedophile, but there are few (legit) times when it can be sung. Personally, I also quite like the one about our near-neighbours' manager and the shape of his head being akin to a copulating primate. But none of these are directly lauding our team. Call me old fashioned if you like (which is probably why I can relate to a song by The Beatles).

When I'm 64? ;-))

Anyhoo, yes I also think we need more songs for our own players. We seem to have plenty of creativity coming up with rude ones for the opposition. Our own lot must have something worth singing about.
