Versions of L Series Lenses

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

I am considering buying a 70-200mm F2.8L lens on Ebay. The pictures shown show some coming with a hard case and others with a soft case. I am wondering if this means there are different versions of this lens?

I have also noticed that some 300mm F2.8L lenses have "Canon" in large red letters on the barrel. Is this an older version?

Thank you for your help.

Dave,

Canon switched to the soft case for the 70-200mm f/2.8 around 1999. There were not any changes to the lens itself.

The only change to the 300mm f/2.8 was when the IS version came out. I believe the optical design of the 300mm f/2.8 has stayed the same since 1981 when it came out as a New FD design. Canon only added what was needed to make it autofocus.
