Newcastle offer to triple Larsson wages

Newcastle United are reportedly preparing an offer to triple Henrik Larsson's wages if he agrees to quit Celtic for St James' Park in the summer. The Magpies are ready to hand the super Swede £4 million-a-year to join Alan Shearer in a new-look Geordies attack next season.

Newcastle are waiting on details of the new transfer system - to be handed down on July 7 - before launching their stunning bid.

Along with Larsson, Newcastle boss Bobby Robson also plans to move for West Ham youngster Michael Carrick and Rangers midfielder Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Seems very interesting if we signed these three players. One forward, one creative midfielder and a left wing. Suitable for our needs.

I can tell you one thing, Larsson isnt worth the money, no way nere it. I'm a Sweden myself and have seen Larsson play a lot of games. You cant really judge him from what he have done in the Scottish league. He's not a bad player, not at all, but he isnt great either. If we could get him for £6-7M and a £2M deal a year then sure. But not for this kind of money.

Interesting view Sudden - I suspect our Scottish correspondents might not agree.

If we wait till July 7th we will end up signing no-one!!

Henrik Larson prior to his injury was an excellent player , after his injury and with O`Neil in charge he is and I do not say this lightly a world class player. He will win the goalden boot award, remembering that he only accrues 1.5 points per goal in Scotland as opposed to 2 in other leagues. What has he got, here we go, (a) essentially a team player,(b)fit and upper body strength (c) pace (d)2 good feet (e)The ability to be in the right place at the right time (f) His natural spring and heading ability arfe awesome (g) He is one of the good guy`s (h) A great majority of his goals are not of the simple tap in variety and to score them in any grade of football is an achievment. (i) He is surrounded by players who know his ability and play to it, Sutton will put himself about, Alan "Geordie" Thompson delivery from the left is really something else , Lubor Morechevik a 34 year old has more creativity that Newcastles whole midfield , Okay the question -> Larson for the Toon, forget it, SAF is putting out price feelers, forget it, but for some reason Celtics shares are dipping,Desmond Dermott has seen 7 mill wiped off his wedge. Henrik`s family love Scotland, he loves the golf , has no interest in managing but his plan is to sign new contract with Celtic, finish his time with them before returning to his first club Hogabord BK. IMHO that the only thing that will change this could be a poor show by Celtic in the CL,

MICHAEL CARRICK, Only seen him twice on TV but no way would I clock him as a creative midfielder at this stage. He does the simple things and does them well and is a good player , it is how one I feel categorises `creative`, Gazza was creative, Barry Ferguson is a hell of a combative midfield player. heres me on about individuals, drawn into the web, its all about the team, the whole team.

Van Bronkhurst, left winger nah , Holland played him at left back cos Numan was injured, he is left hand side midfield , same stamp as Solano but has a nastier bite, very competetive, good buy , he is on his way, Chelsea remain favourites . We can name individuals, buy individuals (Newcastle`s inherent policy), knee jerk reaction but until someone sits down and maps out a long term team plan we will lurch from one crisis to another, I want pots in the cabinet , same as all the Arsenal lads yesterday, who were rightly feted for playing the best football , to a man they were gutted in not having personally won a WINNERS medal and if they had played shit and won, they would have been estatic. This is a spin off from another thread , just say we were a proud lot in the 50`s,cos we won things, then you wanted to bang the bliddy boards heeds togeth- er for the sale and lack of ambition in relation to Gazza/Waddler/ Pedro, build a team around Dyer now is it?, does anyone believe that!! My thoughts on the coming are documented, no more to say, except that unlike the majority who posted this auld gits dreams are for the future, I do have my moments of nostalgia, like Len`s cross and Jackies headed goal at Wembley, cos we won the bliddy thing that`s why Bobby Moncur, barrel chested, bustin a gut in the Fairs Cup Final. cos we won the bliddy thing , last two finals nostalgia crept in when discussing how good we were , The Toon Army and its unshakeable support, we need to be as a club, city , support more ruthless.

Terrific: make bids for 3 players who wouldn't join us if their lives depended on it (young, talented, International aspirations, admired by successful clubs, World at their feet) and then claim "The money was available but the players wouldn't join: that's why we opted to keep the money until players of this calibre are available again. In the meantime we consider 10mil for John Hartson and 4mil for a job- lot of S Americans with hookie passports and lots of air-miles to be the perfect short-term solution."

Going to be a very long Summer.

You will have noted the casual mention of July 7 and a reference to not being able to buy before then. Not by coincidence, the ST deadline will have long passed by then, and as DeB has already said, anyone worth buying will be under contract, or as good as.

In the meantime, unless you see actual Press Conferences being called to unveil new men, remember all this bullsh*t is simply about selling season tickets.

Yes and no Buff.

Your Larsson analysis is fair. He is all the things you say. The very best players in Scotland are good enough to play in the Premiership. Di Canio, Van Hugedonk, Viduka have all been good Premiership players. Larsson would be the same.

I think you're older than me so you can talk about remembering success, I'm only just old enough to remember listening to commentary from Budapest and realising it was important and exciting.

I'm not sure whether you cycnicism around building a team around Dyer is based on the 'fact' that you know we'll sell him just as we sold our youth in the 80s, or whether you don't think Dyer is good enough to build a team around. The selling policy we can only pray, Dyer should be the main stay of the team for 4 or 5 years. If he has to go then he will be raise the same amount of money at 25/26 as he will at 22.

Of course you're right about us needing a long term plan. But my big boss from the States came and talked to me about long term plans once. She was very very good. She knew where she wanted us to be in 5 years time (growth from $2bn turnover to $15bn in five years, daft !!) and knew how she wanted us to get there. She was so inspirational, maybe in an understated John Hall way, but the same sort of vision. She sucked me in but then cut it all down to size by saying "but we need to make the numbers for the next quarter, or we will never get a chance to fulfil our big dream".

For NUFC it is the same. When I try and justify Bobby Robson's time with us then it is getting through the next quarter. He does know what he wants, and can similarly suck us all in with his words. There is one main thing I want from him as his legacy to us. He has to nurture our next manager, make the handover seemless, and not an event which necessitates five new players to come in to make the new team recognised as the new man's and not the old man's. (Dalglish's problem).

There are comments on here about Barton being given a chance to train the players and to prove himself a good coach. One of the justifications for this is that he isn't a good player so therefore he might be a great manager. Hello ? Why not get Mark Stimson he was a crap player so he woudl make an even better manager ??

Buff you reckon you need to hate losing to become a winner. I only see one person at the club with the hatred of losing that you mention.

If we cannot bring someone through internally then we have to accept that we will at least move sideways for a period of time while the new guy beds in.

I personally don't think he'll ever be the player he was and Robson should tell him so. One more injury and a doctor might save Robson's breath. Bobby Robson has talked openly about Shearer being his successor 'in three years time'. If he truly believes this then he should be planning it now. I don't particularly like Shearer, he is miserable, surly, is prepared to play the ref, isn't one of life's good guys, is a ruthless bastard, talks as little to the press as needed, but is civil with them. This is what I expect from someone who is totally focussed on winning, and nothing else. Shearer, would be like Dalglish and send us out to get a 0-0 if that was the correst thing to do. I think he would appreciate a midfield that had Neil Lennon in it.

Luckily we seem to be getting some youth coming through as they reach their early 20s I expect them to being led by Alan Shearer as their manager.

There is no reason to believe you cannot be a good/great player and a good/great manager. Beckenbaeur and Vogts were world class players and managers.

That's the long term fixed. Short term we have to get some winners in the side. We have to just say piss off to the losers, those that accept that "we did quite well to finish mid table with all out injuries".

I would keep everyone 21 and under who has first team experience as they have potential. Of the rest I would turn down all offers (at the moment) for Dyer. EVERYONE else should be made available. We can discuss relative merits of players but Dyer is the only one being mentioned as a transfer target for other sides, this is the best judge of our worth. (Which of our players would have got on the Arsenal bench yesterday ahead of Bergkamp, Parlour, Kanu, Lauren, or Liverpools of Berger, McAllister, Fowler ?)

I've ended up rambling, but why should you have a patent on it :0)

Rambling my friend, I prefer to call it typing from the heart , my dig was not directed at Dyer in anyway, he is class , but I have seen it all before, like I mentioned with Gazza/Pedro/Waddler and Irving Nattrass we had the basis then of what was a potential all Geordie side. At this point if Celtic sold Larson the resulting action from the Bhoys would be fearsome , I am sure it would make the May Day activities look timid by comparision, McNeil would jack , 60,000 would melt away, Larson has created this, I would like Dyer`s position to be the same, ie the board would be feared to sell him. I agree with all you say Mac, as someone else mentioned in passing , on reflection many years later, with a marvelous crowd base , Bobby Robson may have to replay "The Alan Suddick Scenario ", sell your main assest for £60,000 and recruit three journeyman who have been over the distance before. in this case stakes are higher with inflation. If Newcastle got Rivaldo on a free he would not make any difference , one shiny lump of best Shilbottle surrounded by dross aint going to set anything on fire. Young uns mm , Aberdeen play with 8 players aged 21 and under, the 4 to 5 seasoned pros are useless , granted we may have potential coming through , can YBR play them though, I very much doubt it.

You talk about winners and losers, this is to my mind the major issue, the board, staff, players and fan`s , they have the power to make it happen by harnessing all the good things about our club, make the decision, forget the past, cut the tape and go for it. If we have to go sideways to achieve that, I will not like it but will accept it providing that the action taken is positive and is explained to all.

Buff/Macbeth......before Christmas, and during the height of the worst injury time, there was talk about us being interested in some good full back (left FB if memory serves)from Motherwell.....I can't remember his name, but any idea as to what happened to that story?

-- Anonymous, May 13, 2001

I have NEVER associated us with anyone from Motherwell. The mere thought of it makes my skin crawl. Motherwell/Airdrie/Hamilton area of Scotland needs to be avoided with every bit of strength you can muster. Once you've been in you will never be the same again. Years of in-breeding has produced two tribes that go to war with worrying regularity. Whether it is manifested in Rangers-Celtic or in council based cliques it is scary.

Buff may well say they'll make wounderous fighters if a war came around but in peace time their collective chips on shoulders aren't very nice. And the scary eyes on the female of the species, yuk. Wos yerr problem pal ?

Robson projecting an air of financial strife at the Toon before he embarks on a spending spree in which he doesn't want to get quoted silly money?

Bobby Robson has laughed off rumours linking United with a record- breaking swoop for Celtic striker Henrik Larsson. The Swedish international has blasted an amazing 51 goals for the Scottish Champions but Robson has made it clear he does not have the transfer funds to land a player of Larsson's class. Robson said: "I haven't got £15million or £20million for one player, so what's the point about talking about him ?" Celtic boss Martin O'Neill is understandably desperate to hang onto his prize asset and O'Neill confirmed that the striker is close to signing a new contract at Parkhead.
