Noisy Fans

Ceiling fans have made a comeback, and it looks as if they are here to stay this time. One common complaint concerning ceiling fans is noise. Inexpensive fans can emit a low hum. There is little you can do about humming. Any fan can make noises from being out of balance. Out-of-balance noises might be creaks, pops, or ticks. An out-of-balance fan may not appear to be out of balance. Most fans come with a balancing kit, which may take care of the problem. Another strategy is to swap two adjacent blades, in effect changing the balance. Tightening up all the blade screws may eliminate some noises. There's always the possibility that some small debris has gotten stuck next to a moving part. Finally, if all else fails there are fan manufacturers that sell guaranteed silent fans.
