Like other sensitive geniuses Poe had an early awareness of being special and set apart, especially in his feelings. Part of his difficulty and social isolation as well. See his other poem on Silence and the ones on dreams and romance. The specialness and melancholic isolation of the Romantic soul.

I heard there were some doubts about the authenticity of this, though recently it is quoted more than his other non-Raven poems.
