Laminate Laments

Plastic laminate, that ubiquitous material that covers most everybody's kitchen countertops, usually provides years of service with no complaint. Water is the enemy, but as long as it can't get past the surface things are OK. Occasionally the plastic will separate from the substrate (plywood or particle board); this shows up as a bubble in the surface or a flapping corner. The laminate and the substrate are glued together with contact cement and often applying heat and pressure to the surface can reactivate the cement. Try using a hot iron with a towel to protect the surface followed by weights for pressure until things cool down.
