How to Make Roses Last Longer First, be sure to cut off any leaves from the stems that will be underwater in the vase. Leaves will sap the life from a cut flower. The bud needs to get water to survive well.

I don't have a problem with the cats eating the roses-- they seem to much prefer the baby's breath and ferns that accompany. You're right, though, OG-- on top of the fridge is the best place.
