Can peafowl and an avid gardener coexist?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We just bought an old house in the country with 4 acres surrounded by open fields and near a restaurant with peafowl and other exotics. To our delight, some of the birds (10 or so) have defected to our land over time. They free range. We do enjoy them -- but I love to garden. I would like to have vegetables, etc. I beleive I will have to build a cage around the vegetable garden, so they don't eat my hard work. Also, I would like to landscape the grounds. We really don't want to drive them away, just control them a bit. Does anyone have any tips for peacefully coexisting with these birds?

Hello Dianna. We had peafowl in Florida and a garden. And the only way we could control these beautiful creatures was to lock them up! They can fly! They can hop over fences! They LOVE your hard work in the garden! We built them an enclosed cage, and let them out after gardening season was over. Sissy

Dianna, We had peafowl on our place for a while. Beautiful ornaments, fun to watch. They will eat your garden, your orchard and do horrible things to the top and hood of your car. Peacocks are alot like goats. If you got one for free, you paid too much!
