Looks like we've got ourselves a pretty good First Division team

Keep it coming - class gap showing by now - there's still superior fitness to show - but whose.

60 - O'Brien off, McClean on. Speed off, G.Caldwell on. First time that both Caldwells have played together in 'first team'

Hello Josh; I thought I was all on my lonesome. I was just writing this so that people could read it tomorrow morning. I'm watching the Champions' League on Flemish TV - same score 3-0, but probably a different class of game. Pity for Leeds, but Valencia look like an excellent team. How much would Mendieta cost? ALAN Smith just get sent off for chinning Deschamps in the last few seconds! 63 - James Chambers conceeds corner, Sigurdsson heads clear.

64 - Adamson saves at the feet of Cordone.

66 - Jay Chambers under pressure from Cordone conceeds another corner, comes to nothing.

68 - Iezzi caught offside as he's played through.

Harper off, Karelse on. Cort off, Ameobi on.

71 - Quinn cuts in cross from by-line, Iezzi meets it, but keeper Karelse saves. Corner taken by Oliver comes to nothing.

72 - Albion win corner from free-kick, Oliver takes, Newcastle clear.

I'd forgotten Leeds were playing - they've done well to get so far. Nice to see so many 1st teamers in this testimonial match.

Might as well keep going to the bitter end. 78 - Taylor off, Stovell on (Albion's fitness coach).

81 - Cordone off, Lua Lua on.

83 - Bassedas balloons shot over from edge of area.

85 - Iezzi cross met by Collins, but headed over.

86 - Bassedas conceeds free-kick. 30-yards out, McIness strikes just wide of right hand upright.

88 - Oliver free header from Quinn cross, should have done better as ball flies over crossbar.

Attendance: 4,440 including 1,246 away supporters

Flippin' heck. That's two clean sheets in less than 3 weeks. Can we play you every week. Hang on - only if you get promoted.

PS. I always said that Bassedas was a great player ;-)

Ah, nice barry.

Mendieta would cost alot but more intresting looks that young fella Vicente who came in for Kily Gonlazes in left midfield. Only 19 years but already in the national team. But I'll guess he cost some money too...

Is this really our lot they are talking about!!

Albion fielded two different sides against Newcastle, one in each half, but it wasn’t enough to stem the tide as the Premiership outfit stamped their class on Daryl Burgess’ testimonial game, cruising to a 3-0 win.

A sudden downpour arrived just prior to the game, but 4,440 supporters came to pay tribute to Daryl, who, despite his knee injury, managed to get through the supporters game and the first half before making way for Larus Sigurdsson to a standing ovation.

It was Newcastle who deserved many of the plaudits, with the skills of Solano and Cordone particularly eye catching early on. It was Cordone who opened the scoring after 9 minutes, lifting his shot over Brian Jensen and into the far corner of the net after a penetrating run by Stephen glass.

Albion certainly had their moments going forward, with Sneekes drawing praise from Newcastle boss Bobby Robson and Jason Roberts looking a threat, outpacing the Newcastle backline on a couple of occasions, forcing excellent saves from Harper.

From an entertainment point of view, it was sad to see Solano go off after 27 minutes, though perhaps the Albion rearguard were a bit more relaxed about it after he had looked threatening throughout. Despite that, Newcastle’s neat passing game was still easy on the eye and ultimately paid dividends on 31 minutes. An Albion attack petered out in the Newcastle box and, a few neatly placed passes later, Bassedas was placing a header past the Beast tomake it 2-0.

At half time, it was all change for the Baggies, allowing Matt Collins, Adam Oliver and Max Iezzi a taste of the action, though perhaps the most significant change was the reintroduction of club captain Derek McInnes.

Clearly short of full match fitness, Derek proved just how much we have missed his presence in the last six months, putting his stamp on the game, oiling Albion’s midfield engine and spraying both long and short passes around the field – bring on next season!

Even the introduction of McInnes couldn’t stem the initial flow, and Newcastle went 3-0 up after 48 minutes, Cordone again the scorer, ending a strong run by cutting into the box on the left and firing a powerful shot across the face of Chris Adamson and into the far corner.

The game wound down to a tame conclusion as friendlies often do, neither side looking to pick up injuries, though McInnes did get in a couple of crunching tackles, picking up a whack under the left eye from Bassedas into the bargain.

Perhaps one or two Newcastle players such as Cordone felt they had something to prove to their watching manager, but they certainly took the game very seriously, while we were perhaps a little less committed in the tackle with an eye fixed firmly on Sunday. That said, Newcastle’s ease on the ball and the incisive nature of their play made it abundantly clear that Premiership sides will offer a very different challenge to what we’ve become used to in this division.

Still, that’s something to thinkabout for next year…

Wonder if Frank Skinner turned up?

I also wonder if this game, with its strong NUFC contingent, was also about team confidence as much as benefit for the Baggies player? Three goals, clean sheet, incisive passing, playing with ease...when was the last time (including the USA friendlies) we did this?

Well Keegan resigned January 1997
