A BLACKBIRD nesting under the rear wheelarch of a builder's van is surviving with her three eggs as she is driven over Norfolk's bumpy roads.

Every time Julian Patterson sets off for work from his home in Great Yarmouth, he has to check to see that the bird is safely installed in her precarious nursery. And if she flies off when he is out on a job, he has to wait for her return before going home. Mr Patterson, 51, said: "She kept me waiting for almost an hour once. I feel as if I am responsible for her now and that she has chosen me to keep an eye out for her and her eggs."

He said: "I didn't realise that while driving around Norfolk busy laying bricks that there was a blackbird busy laying eggs inside my van. I am doing everything I can to look after her. She must feel that her nest is safe, even if it is a well travelled one."

Mr Patterson said that during the first three days, when he was oblivious to the bird's presence, he was amazed that the nest stayed in place as he travelled over bumpy country lanes. Now, with hatching due any day, Mr Patterson has taken his van off the road and hired a replacement. He said: "I wouldn't be able to live with myself if anything happened to her or her chicks."
