www.eapoe.org the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore has very complete texts of literary criticism by Poe. In his essays on Poetry and his various critiques of other poets, Milton, Coleridge, etc. you will get a feel how he related to them, how he became convinced of the higher value of the short poem(vis a vis the epic). Coleridge was a theorist as well as Poe. he learned much of the English tradition when he was schooled in England as well as the classics. In America Poe was usually a unique forerunner and did not hesitate to judge and sift his contemporaries by his own standards.
