Ford To Idle Two Northeast Ohio Plants

Ford says it will shut down two of its Ohio assembly plants for a few weeks.

The automaker says 3,400 workers at its Lorain and Avon Lake Assembly Plants will be laid off for two weeks from May 14 to May 29. During those two weeks, the employees will receive 95 percent of their pay.

Ford is idling production to balance slow sales. Mercury Villager sales fell more than 50 percent in April and Econoline sales dropped 10 percent last month. Both models are scheduled to be discontinued in 2003.
