I just bought an Ean 7e with the optional battery pack. I turned it on and for the next hour the autofocus worked fine. Suddenly the lens would extend fully then detract fully not finding a good focal point in any lighting condition. I didn't mess with any settings... it simply decided to stop focusing. What is the problem?

I would try another lens if possible to make sure it's the body that's flakey. This happened to my Rebel G, it looks like a wire on the mirror joint snapped and only a shop would be able to fix it (not worth it on a cheap body -- so I manually focus with it, and bought an Elan 7).
