Sausages 'bomb' man surrenders after siege
By Nicola Woolcock

ARMED police and negotiators surrounded television news studios after a man with sausages and a clock taped to his chest threatened to blow himself up.

Staff were evacuated from London Television Centre yesterday morning while the studios, home to GMTV, Granada and LWT, were cordoned off. The man, in his forties, walked out of the building and surrendered after nearly three hours. He was due to be charged last night with making a bomb threat.

Detectives described the sausages as resembling sticks of dynamite in a cartoon and said the device was "realistic looking". About 45 officers were sent to the South Bank studios, including an armed response team, explosives experts, hostage negotiators and a territorial support unit.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "The man walked into the front reception area of the building and said he had a bomb and was going to blow everyone up. We were on the scene within a few minutes and cordoned the whole area off. The bomb looked very real, it was a clock device with sausages around it. The sausages were frankfurters, they were red and packed together covered with clingfilm."

Police said the man, who was drunk, told them he had taken the action because "he was sad".

This sounds rather Monty pythonesque.

I always use Acme brand dynamite, myself.

I wonder what he would have done if he was a happy drunk?
