Did SWB Lie To Get Long-Distance? Misleading Data Could Cost Company License OKLAHOMA CITY, 8:20 a.m. CDT May 4, 2001 -- The Federal Communications Commission is investigating whether SBC Communications provided false data to win approval to sell long-distance telephone service in Oklahoma and Kansas.

SBC is the parent company of Southwestern Bell.

The government is investigating whether SBC misled competitors about demand for high-speed Internet services among customers in Oklahoma and Kansas. The false information allegedly prevented Dallas-based IP Communications from marketing high-speed Internet services to SBC customers.

SBC spokeswoman Saralee Boteler said that the FCC is examining affidavits filed by three company executives. Boteler said that SBC verified that the inaccurate information was given to a competitor, then reported the findings to the FCC.

Officials said that SBC could be fined or lose its authority to sell long-distance service if it's found to have intentionally misled competitors and regulators.

Southwestern Bell won approval to offer long-distance services in September.

I guess the key word is intentionally in this item.

I sure wish the phone company would increase the size of the local calling area, instead of making it smaller and smaller.
