OU Player In Critical Condition After Accident

Thompson's Car Hits Tree In Norman

NORMAN, Okla., 7:08 a.m. CDT May 4, 2001 -- Michael Thompson, a defensive back for the University of Oklahoma's national championship football team, was listed in critical condition Thursday after a one-car accident in Norman.

Eyewitness News 5 reported that the car Thompson was riding in hit a tree at a high level of speed near Indian Hills just east of Porter Road Thursday afternoon.

The junior from Bristow, Okla., was taken by helicopter to University Hospital with "orthopedic injuries to his lower extremities," a hospital spokesman said.

"The doctors are not saying (that he has) life-threatening injuries ... They are saying that he has multiple fractures in the lower extremities, and maybe a broken femur," hospital spokeswoman Gay Conner said.

There was no spinal damage, Eyewitness News 5's Ron Terrell reported.

In a statement, OU President David Boren said that he is optimistic about Thompson's recovery.

"We are very fortunate that he was able to receive excellent medical care from a group of specialists within minutes after the accident," the statement said. "He and his family are in our prayers."

Thompson had one interception and 31 tackles for the Sooners last year.

If you go to the link, you'll be able to see pictures of the truck he was driving. All I can say, is that is one lucky young man to have survived that accident.
