ET Jobless computer staff apply to become spies
By Ohad Gozani in Tel Aviv

MOSSAD, Israel's intelligence agency, has been deluged with applications from technicians laid off by technology firms.

According to the Maariv newspaper, Mossad has received about 1,000 applications following a newspaper advertisement seeking to recruit candidates for its newly-expanded technology department.

The advert appeared to be an indication that Mossad has decided to strengthen its intelligence gathering capacity to cope with the fast-developing internet communications and data processing systems. Potential applicants, mostly computer science graduates, were able to apply by email.

The downturn for Israeli high-tech industry is partly caused by the problems affecting US firms, many of which have subsidiaries in Israel. Hundreds of Israelis have been fired from local technology firms.

A senior Mossad official told Maariv: "We will be able to integrate the best candidates in our ranks." Mossad started running recruitment adverts in newspapers about a year ago. Previously candidates were recruited by word-of-mouth.
