I'm having trouble understanding some of the things going on in this story I understand that the narrator is on a ship or something but this tends to get confusing every few times. Maybe someone can clear up what this story is all about in general.

Answers

From the moment the narrator boards the first (normal) ship at the port of Batavia in Java, he has never mentioned landing at any place. First he is in the normal ship, then it sinks and he is flung onto the ghost (or accursed) ship (possibly the legendry Flying Dutchman).
