News about the Oread newsletter.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

We don't have a new editor yet, and I haven't yet written a new issue. But, I do have some important news.

I have changed the way the Oread email newsletter is being administered. Instead of sending bulk mailings from my Juno account, I'm switching to a web-based system for managing the list.

What does this mean?

First, if you want to get the Oread you must add your name to the subscription list. This is true even if you are already on the list. To add yourself to the list, go to http://www.geocities.com/okansas.geo/ and follow the directions.

Second, you can now manage your own subscription. If you change email addresses, you can go in and update your subscription.

The upshot of these changes is that editing the Oread should be easier. I won't have to worry about keeping the list up to date. I won't have to worry about any problems with Juno's software (since I can send the Oread from the web).

If you have any questions about the new system or if you have any trouble with adding yourself to the list, please post a note on the OK forum.

Suffice it to say, many in the OK community are openly interpreting the move to a web-based emailing list management system as an inevitable, but reluctant concession on the part of Spike that he will be editing OREADs for many years to come!

If that is in fact the case, perhaps those in the community who have been taking the OREAD for granted every month (or every other month, or sporadically or whatever) will now take it upon themselves to contribute to its content or contribute significantly in some other way to the club effort.

I sent a new Oread this morning.

The new web-based system will make it easier to write an Oread and will remove the biggest "hassle" of the current Oread (i.e. keeping the email list up-to-date).

I still think it would be good for the club to have a new editor who would bring some new idea and approaches.

So far (around noon on Monday, 5/7) 24 people have put themselves on the new list. That's pretty good. I sent an Oread to 78 email addresses on Saturday. I figure some of those addresses were for people who've changed address and some were for people who no longer want to get the Oread. I'll be interested to see if we can get up to about 40-50 on the mailing list.

By my count, Spike has missed publishing no fewer that 6 (six) monthly OREADs over the past year. Nevermind that now... let's let bygones be bygones.

Thank you Spike for many wonderful years of OREAD history. Your dedication, sense of ethics, wit, and insight will be sorely missed!

How 'bout Mook as the next OREAD editor? Objections?

Well, my main thought is that Mook is most valuable to the OK community as editor/writer of the UOKH and Soylent Green. Would editing the Oread affect Mook's other projects?

Anyways, I will add Mook's name to my list of people who might be considered as future Oread writers/editors.

I took a look at the mailing list and we are now up to 32 subscribers.
