What is a factor 2 fall?

A factor 2 fall is when a climber falls twice as far as the length of rope connecting him to the belayer. It is not possible to have a factor 2 fall on a 1 pitch climb or in a climbing gym, because the climber will hit the ground before falling that far. In order to have a factor 2 fall, the belay must be part way up a cliff, the leader must not place any pro and fall an equal distance past the belayer. This is the most difficult fall on your rope (it may not be a bad fall for the leader if it is short).
