New York Sen. Hillary Clinton had lunch with former New York Sen. Alfonse D'Amato in New York City on Monday. For six months former New York Mayor Ed Koch had tried to bring them together. D'Amato resisted as long as he could, fearful Hillary would use any meeting between them to her own advantage. Finally, though, he agreed. "But then Hillary started laying down demands," says a former Senate aide to D'Amato.

The demands included not showing up unless it was predetermined who would pick up the check. After two weeks of negotiations it was finally agreed that Hillary would do so. "But when the check arrived, Koch ended up looking at the ceiling while Hillary and D'Amato stared each other down and the check sat in the middle of the table," the former aide says. "I think Hillary actually expected D'Amato to pick up the tab even after she had agreed to do so." In the end, after several tense moments, Hillary did pay the bill, the cost of which will soon be passed on to the American taxpayer.
