homestead cow?

Well we are about to bite the bullet and get a homestead cow. We have researched and think that Dexters are our best bet. We just spent a really tough night at a neighbors as they lost their jersey to milk fever. Do any of you have experience with a homestead cow you'd like to share?

Hi Kim , my dream homestead cow {always wanted one} freshen 2 weeks ago.Well she has kicked the s*&^ out of me .I will try 1 more time .I would not be stuck on a breed as much as an experienced milker .Preferably one who has been hand milked !

Patty, dairymen have a tool that keeps cows from kicking. It looks like metal tube, like what crutches are made of, bent into a "C" shape. It has a rubber boot on either end. I'm not sure, but I think Jeffers carries them. I think if a cow were kicking me, I'd give one a try, at least until she got used to the idea of being milked.
