Accused puppy dumper gets year in jail

NORWICH [Connecticut]-- The man accused of abandoning a litter of puppies in a Dumpster last year will spend one year in jail, beginning Friday. Timothy Gagne pleaded guilty in Norwich Superior Court Monday to four counts of cruelty to animals.

In January 2000, the puppies were found abandoned in a trash bin in Norwich. A passer-by found the animals, but by that time, six of the 11 had already died.

"I really wish that if he didn't want the pups that he gave them to the Humane Society," Oakdale resident Kathy Kissack said.

Kissack and her husband Raymond Coggeshall adopted Sadie, one of the surviving dogs.

"I shudder to think what it must have been like for those puppies," Kissack said.

More than one year after the puppy rescue, Kissack said Sadie is doing well, despite a dislocated hip.

"(Doctors) think that probably was the result of being dropped in a Dumpster," she said.

On Monday, Gagne had appeared in court and then left without telling his lawyer, Deputy Assistant State's Attorney David Smith said.

Subsequently, Norwich Superior Court Judge Kevin Dubay ordered a re-arrest for Gagne, who voluntarily returned later in the day, Smith said.

"The re-arrest was issued, but vacated," Smith said.

Monday afternoon, Dubay sentenced Gagne to a four-year prison term, suspended after one year, meaning Gagne will be released from jail after serving one year.

Gagne also will be put on three years probation after his prison term and is to have no contact with animals.

"We're happy that he's at least getting a year in jail," animal advocate Susan Ponder said.

Ponder said she and other animal advocates have been following Gagne's case since it began. They have carried signs in front of Norwich Superior Court when Gagne was scheduled to appear.

Sigh. It seems that in the last 10-20 years, people have become more outraged at any form of animal abuse but shrug their shoulders when a rapist or murder is given a slap on the wrists rather than what they deserve. Which is life in prison or the death penalty.

Case in point: Timothy McVeigh. This bastard killed 168 men women and children. Very young and innocent children I might add.

Many of the bleeding hearts on this forum that are quick to condem animal abuse are the same that think that giving the death penalty to a slime ball like McVeigh is just as gruesome as sticking puppies in a dumpster.

It's these kind of people make me gag!

Those who are merciful, will obtain mercy.

It's about time they started locking these assholes up. I cannot tell you how annoyed I get when these creeps walk away with a $50 fine for acts of terrible cruelty towards a helpless animal. If I was king, these jerkoffs would get an eye for an eye.

CD, don't forget the leg. Beyond the 168 people who died, I think 19 of which were small children in the Oklahoma bombing, they found a leg, which could never be identified as belonging to anyone. They buried the leg. I think that Dennis and J like to talk big about retaliation for the injustices of government actions, but TO ME, there's something really creepy about burying an "anonymous" leg.

"CD, don't forget the leg."

Uh... Not that it's important, but I just have to ask... Why would you address your above message to me?

That's a good question, CD. My post had started out saying, "and to the poster who mentioned the Oklahoma bombing...", but then I looked up and saw that this thread had been started by you, and changed that to CD. As you might know, once we do the "reply" thing, all the posts beyond the original are absent, and those of us with short-term memory loss get it all messed up. Anyway, I apologize.

Ah. Now I understand. No need to apologize.

So you say they found an unaccounted-for leg at the Oklahoma bombing? Interesting. I didn't know that. I'd have to agree with you, there is something "weird" about burying an anonymous leg.

To: "...Puke"

The law does not allow the death penalty for animal cruelty. Therefore, there is no connection between the death penalty for McVeigh and the justifiable outrage that has been expressed regarding the puppy incident.

Now, if the law did allow the death penalty for animal cruelty, then you could compare the two crimes in question, because you would be comparing like with like; oranges with oranges. You could then move on to discuss the merits of the death penalty vs.its apparent barbarism-- in *relation* to the two crimes.

But if one were to create a list titled "Acts of Barbarism," then the following could be added: 1) Oklahoma City Bombing; 2) Rape (including the environment); dumping puppies in a dumpster; Murder, which includes Capital Punishment, the murderer being sanctioned by the State......

In short, Mr. Spock says your position is illogical.

and those of us with short-term memory loss get it all messed up. Anita, take your HRT (Premerin) it'll help. *grin*

Anita, LOL... I am the same way.

Short term memory loss = STRESS. Its what the Doc told me, anyway :-)

Cherri: Funny. I take both premarin and medroxyprogesterone because I still have a uterus. I don't think they improve my short-term memory at all, because some days I can't remember if I've taken them.

There IS another side-effect of HRT which I've noticed, however. In fact, some years ago #2 was playing with my hair and she said, "Mommy...your hair is turning grey underneath. You should dye it or something." I said, "I'm much too lazy to keep something like that up." This past weekend, while she raised my hair up before cutting it I asked her if she saw any grey. She said, "No. What did you do?" I said, "Nothing. It seems as though a replenishment of Estrogen did the job for me."

Um...sorry to take your thread further astray from the original topic, CD.
